Venice is the centre of the lagoon of Venice, extends over a length of 40 kilometers around the city. Amazingly, only 11% of the lagoon is permanently covered with water – the rest are either islands or mainly mudflats and marshes. Fresh seawater from the Adriatic flows twice daily into the lagoon through three large passages, thus a natural and vital water exchange. Moreover, they are the only drive-through locks that allow ships to pass into the lagoon. A separate water office which handles the cleaning of the channels, the right water and the protection of the lagoon, was established in 1501.
Venice itself is built on over 100 individual islands. In order to provide a sufficient foundation, up to 25 meter-long oak trunks were side by side in the mud to the bottom. Surrounded by salty mud, the wood petrified and provided the perfect foundation for the development of the city. , Venice is still struggling with the muddy ground. The houses are exposed to constant movement; and the foundation is sinking more and more into the lagoon bed. While the residents once kept the problem under control with multiple soil layers and mosaic floors, the situation is becoming increasingly worse.

Most people are pretty law-abiding you might think. Well, think again. According to a recent survey, the average British citizen the law 500 times a year, or about eight times a week.
Some of the offences most commonly committed are downloading music illegally, riding bicycles on the pavement, and dropping litter. Motorists are among the worst offenders, with common crimes including parking on the pavement, eating or drinking behind the wheel, using a non hands-free mobile phone while driving or not putting on a seatbelt.
John Sewell, works for www.onepoll.com, which carried out the poll, said: “It’s worrying to think that so many people are breaking the law on a daily basis. And it’s an even bigger concern that many aren’t at all about it.”

Peter Gray, spokesman for the National Society for the Prevention of Road Accidents, commented, “After many years of campaigning, Britain now has one of the best road safety records in the world. , there are still around six people dying on our road each day. Without doubt, this number could be significantly reduced if people would just follow the law.”

For businesses, there are tremendous opportunities to their markets into foreign countries. The challenge facing those promoting products globally is to determine whether marketing methods should be the same across the world or if they should be to different markets based on specific cultural factors.
It is considered better business practice by many large, established companies to change their products from one country to the next. Take the example of Coca-Cola. The recipe for this drink is changed to suit local tastes – the brand in the US is much sweeter than in the UK, whilst in India the product’s herbs and flavourings are given more . In terms of the car industry, , it would be too expensive for manufacturers to develop and build completely different vehicles for different markets yet a single, global model is likely to appeal to no one. In response to varying needs, Nissan, sells in 75 different markets, for example, has eight different chassis designs. The Ford Mondeo was designed with key features from different markets in mind in an effort to make its appeal as broad as possible. The best policy, as far as most multi-national companies are concerned, is to adapt their product to a particular market.

It isn’t irrational to fear that you haven’t revised or understood enough of the subject you have studied to a course. It may be true that if you have studied and revised a little of the course you have left yourself at risk of failing to accumulate sufficient marks to pass it. It may be that you will need some luck in the of questions that appear in the exam paper.
, it is irrational to believe that if you haven’t covered the syllabus you are inevitably going to fail the course. Few courses, teachers or students “cover the syllabus” in the sense of paying full and equal attention to all parts of it. Examiners do not expect you to have done so. They accept that there are certain areas you are under-prepared, unclear or uninformed. They want too see you demonstrate what you do understand and what you have prepared.
Even when you are struggling to find enough questions to answer, you will find that many have some kind of link or association with your course content. You will normally find some links which you can up into an answer.
