I. Quy tắc phát âm đuôi -s:

1. Khi âm cuối cùng của một từ là âm rung => đuôi  -s thêm vào cũng được phát âm thành âm rung.

Ví dụ: lives, sings, clothes, needs, ...

2. Khi âm cuối cùng của một từ là âm không rung => đuôi  -s thêm vào cũng được phát âm thành âm không rung.

Ví dụ: likes, stops, roofs, laughs, ...

II. Quy tắc phát âm đuôi -es:

1. Khi một từ kết thúc bằng một trong các phụ âm: -s, -ss, -x, -sh, -ch => đuôi -es thêm vào được phát âm là /iz/.

Ví dụ: buses, matches, washes, misses, mixes, ...

2. Khi một từ kết thúc bằng một trong các đuôi: -(d)ge, -ce, -se => đuôi -s thêm vào kết hợp với đuôi "e" trước nó được phát âm là /iz/.

Ví dụ: introduces, practises, bridges, oranges, ...
