Three teenagers describe their hobbies
Melissa, runner
I started running about a year ago. At first, I just ran 1 or 2 kilometers, but l now do about 10. My speed is improving too. I've joined a running club in the town center. I didn't know any of the members before, but now most of them are my mates. My dad was a keen runner when he was younger - he was really fit, but he stopped when he hurt his leg. Actually, I need to order some new running shoes - just a simple pair. I don't think the expensive ones make you run faster!
Sharon, skateboarder
I go skateboarding most evenings in the park. I suppose that's quite a lot, but the park is only a minute or two from our apartment, and I only stay there half an hour or so. Although I stay longer when my friends are there. Sometimes my cousin's there too. He's a beginner, and I'm teaching him a few moves. He's starting to get really good!
Latifa, rock climber
Two of my best friends suggested I should start rock climbing, so now the three of us do it together. The mother of one of them takes us once or twice a month but I'd like to do it every week. When I started, I didn't know you need to get so much stuff and it isn't exactly cheap! I really love it. I don't think I'll ever get bored of climbing!
Which person has made new friends because of her hobby?
Which person does her hobby near her home?
Which person says she is getting better at her hobby?
Which person does her hobby with a family member?
Which person wants to do her hobby more often?
Which person needs to buy something for her hobby?
Which person says her hobby was more expensive than she thought?

Lily's Time Line
Lily wanted to do a project. “What about making a time line?” her father asked. “That is a list of important events in your life.”
“Sure!” Lily replied. “Can you show me how?”
Lily’s dad gave her a piece of paper, a pencil, and a ruler. She held the pencil and used the ruler to draw a straight line. Then her father marked a small line across the longer line at the left end. Above the small line, he wrote, Lily is born.
“Why did you make that small line at the left end, Dad?” Lily asked.
“On a time line, events are ordered from left to right. The first event is placed on the left end and the last event is placed on the right end.”
Lily then wrote the month, day, and year of her birthday under the first small line.
Next, her dad marked another small line to the right of the first small line. He wrote, Lily learns to walk above that line. Then he marked another small line to the right of the second small line. Above this line he wrote, Lily starts school.
“What about when I learned to ride my bike?” asked Lily.
“Right! We should add that,” her dad said.
“I want to add pictures,” Lily told her dad. She made a drawing of herself riding a bike and taped it to the paper. Her dad put a photo of Lily’s first day of school on the time line, too.
Now their work was done. Lily said, “That time line is a picture of my life.” “It is a picture of your life so far,” her dad added. “There is a lot more to come!”

Miniature paintings
Shammi Banu is a painter India. His family has painted very small paintings called "miniatures" for years. Everything Shammi knows about painting was taught to by his father. He was a great teacher. Shammi has taught many people to paint 1997 and now he has British, American and Indian students in his classes.
Shammi uses things like plants and flowers to make the colors he needs for his paints. Making them takes a long time. He breaks the plants into small pieces and washes them and puts them in the paint. When he has the color he wants, he sometimes adds food or glue to the paint to help it stay on the paper.

From: Joanna
To: Emma
Hi Emma,
At school, you said that you don't have any plans for the weekend. Well, how (0) about meeting on Saturday morning? I thought maybe we could go a bike ride. We can go to Moreton-on-Sea, and get something eat. I went there by bike last year. In fact, there were six us, and we had really amazing day. I don't think it will take more four hours to get there and back. Can you let know if you can come?
Hopefully, I'll see you then!
Cheers,
Joanna
