A PASSION FOR BOTTLES
The problem with hobbies is that they can so easily to take over, and I mean that in every sense [to].
They either monopolize your life, making too many demands on your time, or, worse than, they physically invade your living space . One friend of mine is haunted by the desire to collect bottles . This passion, which it started quite by chance five years ago , has now reached an absurd stage, where he has in fact had to rebuild his house to keep with the 3429 (at the last count) selected exhibits . Some of his bottles are indeed worth having, including and an example of the very first Coca Cola design, a hand-painted wine bottle from the 1920s, and some rather so attractive milk bottles , which carry brightly-colored images up of advertising . However, that the overwhelming majority are the plain ordinary and should have been taken away to a bottle bank since years ago . The reason he has hung onto them for all of this time is far away from clear , though I suppose that being true of all hobbies . Once they have taken you over, you become a mere slave to the obsession . If only my friend had chosen bottle tops - such as a collection would fill three drawers at most !

You are going to read a magazine article about a young mother whose house was burgled. For questions 46-55, choose the correct answer.
Lisa Tyler was weary after a long, hard day at the pottery factory where she works. But as she approached her home in the English city of Stoke-on-Trent, her heart lightened: soon she would be having a nice cup of tea, putting her feet up and watching "Friends", her favorite TV series. But first, she needed to change out of her work clothes and pick up her three-year-old son from his grandmother's house nearby.
As Lisa walked up to her garden path, she noticed a light flashing on and off in an upstairs bedroom. A shiver went down his back. What if it was a burglar? Quietly, she crept round to the back of the house to see if there was any sign of a break-in. Sure enough, a window was open and someone's coat was hanging on the gatepost!
Well, 26-year-old Lisa didn't fancy coming face to face with a burglar, so she ran to a neighbor's house and rang the police. But as she sat waiting for the police to arrive, Lisa's curiosity got the better of her and she decided to go back and see what was going on. That's when she saw a leg coming out of the downstairs front window. It was a man climbing out. Lisa gasped in shock. The burglar was carrying her portable television!
At this point, Lisa saw red. She didn't have many possessions and she'd saved long and hard to buy that set. Besides nobody was going to stop her from watching "Friends".
"Oh no you don't," she muttered under her breath, as the fury swelled inside her. Without even stopping to think, she tore across the garden and started shouting at the burglar. 'Give me my TV- drop it now!' she screamed.
Ignoring her, the man fled across the garden. So Lisa threw herself at him and successfully rugby-tackled him to the ground. The burglar struggled to escape, but Lisa hung on like the best kind of guard dog despite being punched and kicked. As she looked up, she realized that she recognized the burglar's face. She was so surprised that she lost her grip and the burglar got away, leaving the TV behind in the garden.
By the time the police and her father arrived, Lisa was in tears. 'I can't believe you were so foolish, Lisa,' scolded her father. "You could have been killed."
"I know, but at least he didn't get my TV," she replied.
Lisa later remembered the name of the burglar, who had been in the same year as her at school. He was later caught and jailed for 15 months after admitting burglary and assault. In May last year, Lisa was given a Certificate of Appreciation by Staffordshire Police for her 'outstanding courage and public action'. But in the future, she intends to leave household security to a new member of her family, Chan, who is a real guard dog.

B. Her mother also did well at school. She became a gifted painter and was, as her father always said, "The prettiest girl in New Zealand."
C. Against hundreds of other actors, Nyree was given the part. She had no hesitation in giving up everything to act and within two years had been brought to England by a famous film producer.
D. By the time she left school, Nyree had passed all the required exams for teaching ballet. She had her own dance studio and enjoyed her work. Bt somethig told her that at some stage she would have to leave New Zealand to find full satisfaction.
E. Nyree was born on the north island of New Zealand. Her father was a butcher who later became a developer and a businessman. She was given the Maori name of Ngaire which was later changed to its present English form as nobody could pronounce it.
F. Sadly, that didn't happen. "My parents were like oil and water," explains Nyree. "They simply couldn't live together. My father's work kept him away from home but I think it was partly because he found it difficult to live with my mother."
G. "It stopped me dead and instead of joining the other performances I walked down to the front of the stage to find out what that noise was."
NYREE'S STORY
After an upbringing in New Zealand and a spell acting in her own country, Nyree Dawn Porter made London her home. Interview by Alan O'Kelly.
Nyree Dawn Porter made her first stage appearance at the age of three. Playing the part of a ladybird in an amateur production of Noah's Ark, she walked onto the stage and into the lights to delighted applause and laughter (0)G.
"That noise" has charmed her ever since and in a long, successful career, both on the theatre stage and on television, she has received plenty of it.
Nyree speaks lovingly of her father Ken, who was warm and affectionate and loved music passionately. For a long time, she was an only child, but when her sister, Merle Isabel, came along, the happy family should have been complete.
As a result, Nyree remembers her childhood as being sad but productive. She had a nervous stammer and was so shy and quiet that her teachers became extremely worried about her. She found her release through books, painting, and ballet.
A teacher name Jim Goodall came to her rescue by encouraging her to do well and by making her president of the drama club. A second influential person was another teacher, who had spent a lot of time in England and France. The teacher enthusiasm helped Nyree to use her natural gift for French and she also encourages Nyree to act.
"I was acting in a local amateur production when a woman came to my dressing room and asked me if I had ever considered acting as a career. She was the wife of the leading actor at the New Zealand National Theatre. Her car had broken down outside and that was the only reason she had come in. She arranged for me to try for a role in an American comedy called The Solid Gold Cadillac."
"I love London and my lucky break came when I was given a letter of introduction to Hazel Vincent Wallace at the Leatherhead Theatre. I got a job in a Christmas show, both acting, and dancing." Nyree Dawn Porter has adopted England, and England has adopted her, too. She has lived in England ever since, although she does visit her old home and regularly works in Australia.
