Read the following passage then choose the best answer to each question below.

Night work

Can you imagine what it would be like working at night? You’d start your day when everyone else was going to bed, and you’d go to bed when everyone else was getting up. Is that really a natural way to live?

These days more and more jobs need to be done at night. Most big hotels offer 24-hour room service, and need staff at reception and working in the bars. Many companies have 24-hour call centers to deal with emergency inquiries. There are 24-hour supermarkets, and of course, there are the workers for emergency services such as fire-fighters, the police, and hospital workers.

However, few people can work well at night. This is partly because we cannot easily change our sleeping habits. Some people can manage on a little as three hours’ sleep while others need as many as eleven hours – you’re either a ‘short sleeper’ or ‘long sleeper’. If working at night stops you from getting the amount of sleep you need, you will damage your health.

The best part of the day everyone is around lunchtime and the worst point is between 2 a.m and 4 p.m. So if you’re driving home at this time or doing something important at work, things are far more likely to go wrong!

Humans are used to sleeping at night and being awake during the day, and they’ll never be able to do things the other way round. The problem is that today’s 24-hour society isn’t going to slow down which means that night-workers will remain.

What does the writer say about the future?

  • Fewer people will work during the day.
  • Some jobs will always be done at night.
  • People will demand fewer services.
  • People will work longer hours.

According to the passage, when is the best part of the day?

Body Language

Many people believe the way to really know somebody is to understand what they mean when they’re saying  at all! This is the science of  body language. In , learning how to recognize body language and how to use it to communicate your  message, is big business.  there are hundreds of books written on the subject.

Experts are even going into companies to talk employees about how to perform better. They suggest that this can be done with a  changes in their body-talk. Welcoming body language, for example,  to include giving a friendly nod to say hello and leaning forward slightly to show you want to listen. The problem is, the more we understand body language, the more able we are to change it if we want to. This means that realizing when somebody is  a lie is more difficult than  used to be!

COMMENTS

BAND 3

This is more than an adequate attempt. There are a number of errors, but they do not cause many problems for the reader, e.g answer to you, how is my house, came a friend. There is some attempt at organization and at linking sentences, e.g about home…… because and when …. and some range of vocabulary,

e.g flat, boxer, old town, terrace,….

 Question 8 – sample band 5

IT WAS AN USUAL EVENING

It was a warm evening in the summer. I was on my way to Andy. He had asked me to call in. As I had plenty of time I was walking slowly. It became darker. Suddenly I hear a cry. Not far away on a bridge, I recognized two people who were fighting. When I looked carefully I could see two boys. Then one of them pushed the other down the bridge into the water and ran away. By the time I arrived at the river, I saw that the boy in the water was unconscious. Without a second thought I sprung into the river I could catch him and bring him out of the water. I started with first aid. At first, I thought he was dead but then he started to move his arms and to breathe. He was alive.

COMMENTS

BAND 5

This is a very good attempt, showing confident and ambitious use of language, for example As I had plenty of time, …..; There is a wide range of structures and vocabulary, for example without a second thought… good use of linking devices makes it well organized and coherent. Although there are a few minor non-impeding errors, for example, one of them pushed the other down the bridge, no effort is required by the reader
