Clever birds

The wild birds known as ravens are thought to be very clever. In fact, they can solve some quite problems, especially when they're trying to get food. For example, one bird was filmed taking a box of nuts from a bird table and dropping it onto the ground it would break and the bird could eat the nuts inside!

Scientists also that the birds could actually use stones as tools to carry out simple tasks. So in an experiment, they taught five birds to use a tool to open a box with food inside. The birds soon became very experienced at doing this. So for the next experiment, the birds were given a small of tools to choose from. They always picked the tool scientists had given them for the first task. And hours later, they could still remember which tool they'd used!

Out in the Pacific Ocean, 3,700 kilometers from Los Angeles, are the islands of Hawaii, the 50th state of the United States, with its area of 16,700 square kilometers.

The first Hawaiians arrived from other Pacific Islands sometime around 100 AD. Then in 1778, Captain Cook arrived in Hawaii. He put the islands on his maps of the Pacific Ocean. Then more ships knew Hawaii and began stopping there for supplies. In 1820, a small group of people from the eastern United States came to teach the Hawaiian people about Christianity. They started farms to grow sugar cane and pineapples. Because there were not enough people to do all the farm work, farm owners brought in Asians - Chinese, Japanese, and Filipinos.

Later Koreans, Portuguese, and Puerto Ricans also came. More people came from the US mainland and from other Pacific Islands, and Hawaii has become a place with traditions from several countries. People from the various nation groups have married each other, so today the groups are partly mixed. Hawaiians are very friendly and always welcome visitors. Most people need some preparation before they are ready for the workforce, and planning should begin long before it is time to start a career.

Many high school students don't yet know what they want to do. High school is a great time to start thinking about careers. Settling on just one occupation in high school isn't necessary, but they should know how to explore careers and put time into investigating them and learning about their skills and interests.

Understanding what you enjoy and what you are good at is the first step in exploring careers. It is important to think about what you like to do because work will eventually be a big part of your life. Once you have thought about the subjects and activities you like best, the next step is to look for careers that put those interests to use. If you love sports, for example, you might consider a career as a gym teacher, or coach.

Another approach to identifying potential career interests is to consider local employers and the types of jobs they have. There are many jobs in manufacturing and healthcare near the high school. Talking directly to workers can help you get information about what they do. If you don't know workers in occupations that interest you, ask people such as your parents, friends, or teacher for their contacts.

If job shadowing gives you a taste of what an occupation is like, imagine how helpful getting experience could be. Students can begin getting career-related experiences in high school through internships, employment, and other activities. Completing an internship is an excellent way to get experience. Internships are temporary, supervised assignments designed to give students practical job training.
