Read the following passage then choose the best answer to each question below.

As heart disease continues to be the number-one killer in the United States, researchers have become increasingly interested in identifying the potential risk factors that cause heart attacks. High-fat diets and “life in the fast lane” have long been known to contribute to the high incidence of heart failure. However, according to new studies, the list of risk factors may be significantly longer and quite astonishing.

Heart failure appears to follow seasonal and temporal patterns. A higher percentage of heart attacks occur in cold weather, and more people experience heart failure on Monday than on any other day of the week. In addition, people are more susceptible to heart attacks in the first few hours after waking. Experts first noticed this interesting morning pattern in the mid-1980s and have since figured out several potential factors behind it. Several morning physiological changes - including increased blood pressure, elevated heart rate, higher levels of stress hormones, and decreased blood flow to the heart - likely combine to cause the peak in heart attack risk observed between 8:00 and 10:00 AM.

Other studies have revealed birthdays and bachelorhood as surprising risk factors. Scientists suggest that heart attack rates increase greatly for both females and males in the few days just before and after their birthdays. Furthermore, unmarried men face a higher risk of heart attacks compared to their married peers, suggesting that social and emotional factors may influence heart health.

Though stress is thought to be linked in some way to all of the previous risk factors, deep research continues in the hope of further understanding why and how heart failure develops.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

Are Human Beings Getting Smarter?

Do you think you are smarter than your parents or grandparents? According to James Flynn, a professor at a New Zealand university, you might be. Over the last century, IQ test scores of people in some countries have got increasingly better - on average, three points better for every decade that has passed. This trend of improving scores is known as “the Flynn effect,” and scientists want to know what is behind it.

IQ tests and other similar tests are designed to measure general intelligence rather than knowledge. Flynn knew that intelligence is partly inherited from our parents and partly the result of our environment and experiences, but the improvement in test scores was happening too quickly to be explained by genetic factors. So what happened in the 20th century that led to higher test scores?

Scientists have proposed several explanations for the Flynn effect. [I] Some scientists suggest that the improved test scores simply reflect increased exposure to tests in general. [II] Frequent testing allows people to develop effective test-taking techniques that help them perform better. [III] Others have pointed to better nutrition, which results in babies being born larger, healthier, and with greater brain development than previous generations. Another possible explanation is that educational approaches have broken the mold. Children are no longer expected to learn by rote but rather to be creative and discover things independently. [IV]

Flynn suggested that learning new technologies may have enhanced people’s problem-solving skills. This trend seemed valid during the first decade of his tests when IQ scores rose in many countries. However, in recent years, IQ test scores in some countries have begun to decline. Data from Norway, the Netherlands, Australia, and Great Britain have indicated that as these nations become increasingly advanced, IQ scores have started to decrease.

Although scientists remain uncertain about the exact cause of this decline, they think technology significantly influences how people learn and access information. For instance, people today can easily access various types of information through online sources such as Google or Wikipedia. The danger is when they start to rely too much on these sources of information, and not do any thinking for themselves. Lifestyle changes that come with modern technology may also have a negative effect on intelligence, such as video games and television making people less social. Therefore, while people worldwide might have become smarter during the 20th century, improving technology and changing lifestyles may soon reverse that trend.

Which of the following is TRUE about the Flynn effect?

  • It was primarily explained by genetic improvements in intelligence passed down through heredity.
  • It might be a result of people's living conditions and experiences during the 20th century.
  • It showed that IQ tests might measure acquired knowledge rather than general intelligence.
  • It indicated that test score improvements were happening slowly enough to be explained by genetics.

  • coexisted

  • distinctly
  • entirely

Which of the following countries was NOT mentioned as a place that has witnessed a decline in IQ scores?

  • Norway
  • Australia
  • Japan
  • Great Britain

  • People in modern society face fewer challenging situations requiring problem-solving skills.
  • Today's generations tend to undertake fewer standardized tests and similar assessments.
  • In the present day, people rely excessively on computers for a wide range of tasks.

  • To argue that video games are the main cause of declining intelligence
  • To suggest that scientists have proven modern technology lower IQ
  • To compare the effects of video games and television on learning
