Read the following passage then choose the best answer to each question below.

It is often held that technology in general does little to help family relationships as, in many cases, family members are more interested in their smartphones and the TV than they are in each other. Before smartphones, the TV was blamed the most for breakdowns in communication between parents and children. It was argued that 'the box' stopped them from talking to each other, and conflicts between family members over what programmes to watch created barriers and caused irritation.

However, TV programmes can be both informative and entertaining. They often provide topics for family members to discuss, bringing them closer together rather than driving them further apart. What is more, twenty-first-century families do not need to watch the same programme at the same time. The fact that people can watch what they want results in more time for families to be together rather than less.

The smartphone has taken over from the TV as the major reason for the lack of communication between family members. Parents often do not see why their children spend so much time online and fail to see the importance of having an online identity while most teens feel their online image is part of who they are. They often criticize the amount of time their children spend online rather than attempting to understand why they do it. In fact, adults are often not very good examples themselves. Who has not witnessed a table at a restaurant where all the family members are silently focused on their mobile devices?

Broadly speaking, smartphones do have some negative effects on family relationships. This technology is still relatively new, so many families have not yet learned how to deal with it. Parents and children should discuss how they use technology to help them all make the most of technology instead of blaming it for their problems.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

You can usually distinguish when your friends are joyful or furious by the looks on their faces or by their actions. This is useful because interpreting their emotional expressions helps to activate our response.  Emotions have evolved, hence humans can respond to important situations and communicate our intentions to others. But does raising the eyebrows or rounding the mouth mean the equivalent thing in Minneapolis as it does in Madagascar? Much research on emotional expressions has addressed such questions.

According to Paul Ekman, the leading researcher in this area, people use and understand the same "facial language". [I] Studies by Ekman's group have demonstrated that humans share a set of universal emotional expressions that testify to the common biological heritage of the human species. [II] For instance, smiles represent happiness, and frowns signal sadness, whether in places like Argentina, Japan, Spain, Hungary, Poland, Sumatra, the United States, Vietnam, New Guinea, or the Eskimo villages north of the Arctic Circle. Ekman and his colleagues claim that people everywhere can recognize at least seven basic emotions: sadness, fear, anger, disgust, contempt, happiness and surprise. [III] There are, however, huge differences across cultures in both the context and intensity of emotional displays the so-called display rules. In many Asian cultures, for example, children are taught to keep their emotions in check especially negative ones. On the other hand, many American children are encouraged to express their feelings more openly. However, in all cultures, emotions usually show themselves, to some degree, in people's behavior. [IV]

The ability to read facial expressions develops early, too. Very young children pay close attention to facial expressions, and by the age of five, they are nearly as skilled as adults at reading emotions on people's faces. This evidence suggests a biological basis for our ability to express and understand a basic set of human emotions. Moreover, as Charles Darwin pointed out over a century ago, some emotional expressions seem to appear across species boundaries. Cross-cultural psychologists tell us that certain emotional responses carry different meanings in different cultures. For example, what emotion do you suppose might be aroused by sticking out your tongue? For Americans, this might indicate disgust, while in China, it can represent surprise. Likewise, a grin on an American face may indicate joy, while on a Japanese face, it may just as easily mean embarrassment. Clearly, culture influences emotional expressions.

Which of the following best paraphrases the underlined sentence in paragraph 1?

  • It is made possible for humans to handle crucial circumstances and convey their ideas clearly owing to the evolution of emotions.
  • The more effectively we deal with important situations and convey our intentions, the more our emotional evolution increases.
  • So important are reacting to key circumstances and sharing intentions that emotions have evolved over time to support them.
  • Humans would rather evolve their emotions than fail to respond to crucial situations and express their intentions effectively.

Many studies on emotional expressions try to answer the question whether _____.

  • whether similar emotional reactions and expressions convey the same meaning in different cultural settings
  • whether the gesture of raising eyebrows carries the same significance in Minneapolis and Madagascar
  • whether the significance of raising the eyebrows is closely linked to that of rounding the mouth
  • whether emotional responses and expressions are shared by people of different ages and backgrounds

Why is Paul Ekman mentioned in the passage?

  • As a representative of researchers in global spoken language studies
  • As an example of investigators on universal emotional expressions
  • As a model for researchers mastering varied facial expressions
  • As an expert in speaking and understanding multiple languages

The phrase "keep their emotions in check" in paragraph 2 is CLOSEST in meaning to _____.

  • sail through their emotions
  • count on their emotions
  • bottle up their emotions
  • hand out their emotions

  • both adults and children express the same facial language
  • children are better than adults in the ability to interpret feelings
