Daniel Tammet is an extraordinary man who can speak eleven languages and solve complicated mathematical problems in just a few seconds. His mind works in ways that most people cannot imagine. Despite his incredible abilities, he has struggled with communication and comprehending other people’s emotions.

Daniel’s abilities and difficulties come from a mental condition called autism, which affects how he interacts with the world. Now thirty-five years old, he has learned to manage his life better, but this wasn’t always the case. As a young child, things were much harder. He cried a lot as a baby, and when he started school, he found it nearly impossible to connect with others. He couldn’t read body language, make eye contact, or figure out what people were feeling. He never played with other children or toys; instead, numbers became his only toys.

What makes Daniel truly unique is how he interacts with numbers. They aren’t just digits to him; each one has its own colour, shape, and even personality. He doesn’t calculate numbers in the traditional senses but rather sees them as vivid experiences. For instance, when multiplying, he visualizes two shapes changing until a third shape appears, which is the answer.

His exceptional abilities enable him to do things that others find impossible, like perfectly copying pictures or planning a book entirely in his head. Yet, he is aware of his limits. He admits that he often struggles to understand others’ emotions and sometimes has to pretend to feel what they do to fit in. Despite this, he is gradually learning to express his emotions. When his cat died, he says he suffered from sadness for the first time.

Today, Daniel no longer desires a typical life. Instead, he uses his talents to make a difference. Through years of lectures, books, and research, he shares the knowledge and experiences he has gained. Read the following passage then choose the best answer to each question below.

Ecotourism

Ecotourism, according to the International Ecotourism Society, involves responsible travel that protects nature and supports local communities. For example, simply walking through a rainforest isn't considered ecotourism unless it benefits the area, like creating jobs for locals or protecting wildlife. Nowadays, more countries are realizing that it's possible to earn money while preserving their natural resources.

Costa Rica has been a leader in the ecotourism movement for many years and was named the most popular ecotourism destination by TripAdvisor.com in April 2012. In 1999, it created the Certification for Sustainable Tourism (CST) program, which the United Nations World Tourism Organization later adopted as a model for Latin America. Due to its strong conservation efforts, more than 25 percent of Costa Rica's land is protected in national parks. The country’s tourism industry generates over a billion dollars each year and provides jobs for thousands of people.

Unfortunately, many businesses in the ecotourism industry misuse the "ecotourism" label to increase profits. This type of ecotourism isn't always responsible and can harm the environment it seeks to protect. One concern is that the large number of visitors, especially during peak seasons, can take a toll on ecosystems. Ecotourists tend to seek out places with the rarest animals and plants; even if they try not to disturb the environment, their presence can still stress fragile species. Another problem is the interaction between animals and humans. For instance, in a Costa Rican national park, wild monkeys have begun eating garbage left by visitors and even aggressively stealing food from them.

Controlling these abuses isn't easy, either. In developing countries where salaries are low, corruption can lead officials to overlook ecological damage. For example, a large resort facility, normally not allowed near a sanctuary, might be approved if the company offers money to certain government officials. Limited resources are another issue. Vast areas of forests and beaches, which would require significant manpower to protect, are often monitored by just a few people.

[I] While tourists can negatively impact ecosystems, the same areas might have been totally destroyed by industries such as farming, logging, or mining if the ecotourism industry did not exist. [II] Tour guides can also be educators who train people to care for the environment. [III] By exploring these beautiful rainforests and seeing rare animals, visitors get a sense of their value and, ideally, carry these lessons back to their homes. [IV]

It is easy to be critical of the ecotourism industry, but it is important to be positive as well. Ecotourism can never be "pure"- we can't expect zero negative effects on the ecosystem. Nor is it realistic to assume humans won’t explore every accessible corner of the world. If protection efforts are maintained and strengthened, those remaining places of undisturbed nature may be influenced, but at least they won't be destroyed.

Which change has NOT occurred in Costa Rica since the introduction of ecotourism?

  • Thousands of jobs related to ecotourism have been created.
  • A larger area of land is now protected within national parks.
  • Monkeys have started using rubbish as their food source.
  • There has been a decrease in the number of corruption cases.

The phrase "take a toll on" in paragraph 3 is OPPOSITE in meaning to _____.

  • broaden
  • adopt
  • boost
  • assess

The word "their" in paragraph 3 refers to _____.

  • ecotourists'
  • places'
  • animals and plants'
  • ecosystems'

The word "Vast" in paragraph 4 is CLOSEST in meaning to _____.

  • Vulnerable
  • Industrial
  • Relevant
  • Enormous

Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

  • In the absence of ecotourism, industrial activities could have entirely ruined areas of the ecosystems.
  • The Certification for Sustainable Tourism program is the most popular among Latin American citizens.
  • Only a small number of people know that ecotourism provides economic advantages.
  • Ecotourism could be completely harmless to the environment if individuals put in greater effort.

Which of the following best summarises paragraph 4?

  • Large resort facilities are always approved in sanctuary areas due to government corruption.
  • Corruption and limited resources make it difficult to prevent ecological damage in developing countries.
  • Developing countries have strict laws to prevent ecological damage, but they are rarely enforced.
  • Ecological damage in developing countries is primarily caused by the local communities, not businesses.

Where in paragraph 5 does the following sentence best fit?

"Through this approach, future generations can develop a deep respect for the natural world."

  • [I]
  • [II]
  • [III]
  • [IV]

Which of the following best paraphrases the underlined sentence in paragraph 6?

  • Considering the positive and negative sides of the ecotourism industry is a frequent practice.
  • Even though ecotourism industry brings positive changes, its negative aspects cannot be ignored.
  • People easily slip into disputes about the positive and negative aspects of the ecotourism industry.
  • Though finding fault with ecotourism comes naturally, it’s important to acknowledge its positive aspects.

What can be inferred from the passage?

  • It took a long time for countries to realize the possibility of earning profits while protecting nature.
  • Ecotourism industry is considered the biggest contributor to the economy of Costa Rica.
  • Ecotourism can put the environment under threat if carried out in an irresponsible way.
  • Ecotourists have such bad impacts on ecosystems that the visited areas can be destroyed completely.

Which statement would the author most likely agree with?

  • The practice of ecotourism is a damaging development that needs to be discouraged.
  • Ecotourism stands as a highly effective method for nations to attract tourist spending.
  • Even with its drawbacks, ecotourism usually leads to overall gains for ecosystems.
  • There's a strong possibility that ecotourism will experience a reduction in its popularity in the future.
