Recently, researchers carried out a survey to investigate what motivates young adults to exercise. The study might shed light on why so few college students exercise and why many stop their exercise workouts after they graduate. Researchers analyzed responses from 937 randomly selected college students at a leading U.S. university. The research showed that 39% of male students and 26% of female students exercised at least three days a week for 20 minutes each time. These exercise patterns were fairly similar to those in surveys at other universities. The survey also revealed some crucial factors which encourage college students to exercise.

For male students, peer support played an important role in motivating them to exercise. Men who exercised regularly received strong encouragement from their friends. Those who exercised occasionally got only medium support, while those who did not exercise had little or no encouragement from friends. For female students, however, the main influence on workout routines came from family rather than friends. Women who worked out regularly reported strong support from their families. In contrast, women who sometimes exercised had moderate family support, and those who never exercised received little or none.

While many students live far from home, female students may have weaker support systems than male students. This difference could account for the gender gap in regular exercise habits among college students. While men are more likely to be supported by nearby friends, women may not feel the same push if their families are far away. The level of encouragement a student receives appears closely related to their exercise routine.

A medical professor, after reviewing the study outcomes, shared his view on the gender differences in exercise. He said that body performance was not as strongly emphasized for girls and young women as it is for boys and young men.  “It’s a macho thing to be able to run faster or lift weights,” he said. “However, for the younger generation, this gender gap appears to be getting smaller,” he continued.

  • Family encouragement appeared to have less influence on female participants' exercise motivation than peer pressure.

CHILDREN AND ADVERTISING

Views on advertising aimed at children vary across Europe. In Sweden, it is considered unacceptable and is banned for children under 12 with the approval of the majority of the population. In France, advertisements are seen as part of preparing children for future life in a consumer society. In the UK, there are rules on food, health, hygiene, safety, and decency, along with broadcast restrictions.

Children's reactions to advertisements can be very different from grown-ups. If adults see a product advertised and don't find it when they go shopping, they forget about it. As children develop the ability to recognise and understand advertisements and their purpose, they start making demands. If these demands are not fulfilled, they might start screaming or throwing themselves to the floor. It is difficult to explain to young children the reasons why they cannot have everything which - according to advertising - is 'for them'.

[I] Research by advertising agencies has confirmed that children's personal preferences can be targeted and changed by TV advertising. If adults, who have had years of practice in seeing through and being able to deal with ads, could not be influenced in their decisions to choose or buy products, then no company would spend millions on advertising. [II] Research has also confirmed the influence of the media upon the close match between children's tastes and the content of the programmes they watch. [III] The effectiveness of advertising increases when the ads are shown in between or around programmes aimed at children, or when children perceive an advertisement to be made 'for them' as, for example, with toys or breakfast cereals. [IV]

Advertisements today are not so much about the products, but rather about the character of the consumers and how they should feel when they use or possess the advertised product. Messages suggest that purchasing or having specific toys or treats puts the finishing touches on a child’s sense of success and happiness.

Advertisement research found that the media can shape children's preferences for different toys, TV characters, lifestyles, etc. at different ages. Children's preferences are formed by the media and presented to them again in advertising. Children who are exposed to a lot of advertising are thus educated about a particular lifestyle: they are educated about living in a consumer society. They learn certain attitudes - the importance of money, what products are needed, how they are to be used and how products are supposed to make them feel.

Allowing business interests and economic criteria to determine what children are exposed to when watching ads will undoubtedly have some effect on their future view of society. After all, the companies certainly do not have the children's moral or social well-being in mind; they are only concerned about profits.

Which of the following is TRUE about most Sweden people?

  • They would like to enforce a ban on child-targeted advertising.
  • They argue that children should be allowed to view advertisements.
  • They impose restrictions on food, health, and safety advertising.
  • They are in favor of forbiding advertisements directed at children.

  • they remain determined to search until they finally get what they are looking for

Which of the following best paraphrases the underlined sentence in paragraph 1?

  • Not until children begin to make requests does their awareness of adverts and their aims become clearer.
  • It is when children have a sharper awareness of advertising and its goals that their demands begin to appear.

  • Without a better awareness of advertising and its purposes, children’s requests will continue to appear.
