The Internet: Changing Everything

Let’s try a simple experiment: spend five minutes searching for information about Angola. How did you do it? What kind of information did you find? Chances are, you went online, typed the word "Angola" into a search engine, and easily discovered many useful facts. This clearly shows how helpful the Internet can be for quickly finding information.

Over the past two decades, the Internet has completely changed how we live, work, and learn. The most dramatic shift has been in how we attain information. Twenty years ago, you would have needed an encyclopedia to learn about Angola. If you had wanted information, you would have had to get out of your chair, grab an encyclopedia, flip through the pages, and search for the word “Angola”. Today, all you need is about five seconds and you’ll have the exact same information. This technology makes work a lot faster and more efficient.

Information storage has also become more organized and accessible. Two decades ago, offices were filled with stacks of paper files. Finding a document required searching through desk drawers and piles of paper. Nowadays, many people use cloud storage, a technology that allows us to keep documents online. All you have to do is log into your account and you can easily find any stored file you need.

Another major change is in work habits. These days, an increasing number of people work from home. They set up "home offices," complete their tasks remotely, and send their finished work to companies via email. This new way of working makes daily life much more convenient. Nevertheless, not everyone welcomes these changes. Some people think modern life has become too easy, and that technology is making people less physically and mentally engaged. However, most agree that despite any drawbacks, technology provides more advantages overall. Whether we approve or not, the Internet has permanently changed our lives.

Read the following passage then choose the best answer to each question below.

Most parents want their sons and daughters to have equal opportunities for success in life. While laws and policies promote gender equality, outdated beliefs and prejudices still exist, making it difficult for parents to raise children without traditional gender roles influencing them.

[I] Gender stereotypes are fixed ideas about how boys and girls "should" behave. [II] For example, girls are often expected to be gentle, emotional, and accommodating, while boys are pushed to be tough, competitive, and unemotional. [III] Studies, including one from American University in Washington, D.C., show that teachers treat boys and girls differently in class. [IV] When boys speak, teachers often give feedback on their ideas, but when girls speak, the focus is more on their behavior rather than what they say. Consequently, children receive the message that boys’ thoughts matter more while girls should mind their manners.

From birth, society reinforces differences between boys and girls. Parents often dress baby girls in pink and boys in blue, and as children grow, they receive different toys - dolls and kitchen sets for girls, action figures and building toys for boys. While there’s nothing wrong with these choices, the issue arises when certain activities are seen as only for one gender. Heather J. Nicholson, Ph.D., director of the National Resource Center for Girls, Inc., explains that this limits children’s ability to learn important life skills.

For example, a study showed that gender stereotypes strongly influence how children earn money. About 58% of eighth-grade girls earned money by babysitting, but only 6% of boys did the same. Meanwhile, 27% of boys made money mowing lawns, while just 3% of girls did. These gaps speak volumes about how early stereotypes shape children’s experiences and opportunities. If we want children to grow into capable adults - whether as parents, workers, or leaders - we must break down these old expectations.

Children naturally absorb societal messages about gender, but parents can help them think differently. By encouraging both boys and girls to try different activities - whether it’s cooking, sports, or caregiving - parents can teach them that skills aren’t limited by gender. Supporting children’s interests, regardless of stereotypes, helps them develop confidence and abilities beyond traditional roles.

The key is awareness. When parents recognize the hidden messages children receive, they can challenge stereotypes and give their kids the freedom to grow without unnecessary limits. By doing so, we can raise a generation that values ability over gender and sees everyone as capable of success.

The word "outdated" in paragraph 1 is CLOSEST in meaning to _____.

  • repetitive
  • tedious
  • obsolete
  • passionate

  • teachers often focuses more on boys being active and girls being well-mannered
  • teachers pay more attention to boys’ ideas and girls’ behavior during class discussions
  • while girls are seen as emotional and soft, boys are expected to be hard and focused

"From their earliest years, children are impacted by these gender stereotypes."

  • [I]
  • [II]
  • [III]
  • [IV]

Which of the following best summarizes the main idea of paragraph 3?

  • Modern society encourages different toys for boys and girls, which helps them develop distinct skills.
  • The color pink for girls and blue for boys is scientifically proven to affect children’s future career choices.
  • Parents should avoid using color-coded clothing for babies to prevent gender stereotypes.
  • Gender-based toy and color choices can limit children’s chances to develop a full range of life skills.

Which of the following is TRUE based on the study about children earning money?

  • There were almost ten times as many eighth-grade girls doing babysitting jobs as boys.
  • Nearly equal percentages of boys and girls earned money through tutoring.
  • More than half of eighth-grade boys earned money by mowing lawns.
  • Boys could make the most money by doing outdoor jobs such as mowing lawns.

  • Only by removing these old expectations can we prepare children to become capable adults - whether as parents, workers, or leaders.
  • All adults - parents, workers, and leaders - contribute to children's development when they eliminate these old expectations.
  • Unless these old expectations are removed, children still can become skilled adults - whether as parents, workers, or leaders.

The word "them" in paragraph 5 refer to _____.

  • adults
  • parents
  • messages

  • The challenges that adult men and women face could stem from gender stereotypes.
  • Parents can help shield their children from the influences of gender stereotypes.

Which of the following best summarizes the passage?

  • Gender stereotypes about "appropriate" roles for each gender should have been eradicated by modern laws promoting equality.
  • Gender stereotypes limit children’s development, but shifts in awareness and active support can help them overcome these barriers.
  • Children naturally prefer their own favorite toys and activities, which parents should respect to support their emotional development.
  • While biological differences between boys and girls exist, they should not determine the types of toys or activities children engage in.

Restaurant Manager

Laura Davy has been the manager at Quinto's restaurant since 2001. Quinto's is a popular restaurant and often has as many as 500 customers in one evening. It is a big business to run but Davy says she can't imagine doing anything else.

Restaurant work was not what she intended to do. She started studying music at university but then left to work in a restaurant. "My family didn't agree with my choice but it was very clear to me that that was what I wanted to do." She did a bit of everything and learned quickly. She started training as a chef but soon realized she was better at restaurant management.

Davy now divides her time between the restaurant floor and the office. She sometimes regrets spending so much time in the office and misses being with customers. "I have to arrive at the office very early. There are always a lot of kitchen supplies to order and bills to pay before meeting staff. If I have a really busy day in the office, I leave around 7, just before people arrive in the restaurant."

Davy manages about 140 staff and knows how important they are to the business. "I don't have happy customers without good staff." She sometimes employs the wrong people but believes that making mistakes is the only way to learn. "I've succeeded in building up a good team." However, staff sometimes leave Quinto's to work in other restaurants or travel abroad. Davy accepts that she cannot always keep staff. "If they've already made their decision, there's no point saying anything. But if they come back at a later date, I'm happy to re-employ them."
