Three teenagers talk about a school photography competition
Olivia Brown
I entered the school photography competition last month. Because I don't have a smartphone, I borrowed my dad's large camera. My older sister showed me how to use it, which was really helpful! On Saturday morning, I walked to the city centre and took pictures of beautiful old buildings in the bright sunshine. Although I didn't win a prize this time, I loved the experience. I hope to try again next year with better pictures.

I love taking photos of wild birds, so I decided to join the school competition. My science teacher told me about a quiet forest near my school, and I walked there after classes. It was raining quite heavily, but I still got some great pictures using my new smartphone! I was really surprised when I won second place. The headteacher gave me an excellent photography book, and I read it every evening in my bedroom.

For the competition, I wanted to photograph a basketball match. I didn't have much money, so I bought a cheap digital camera from the supermarket. On Sunday afternoon, my dad drove me to the local sports centre because it was too far to walk. I took lots of photos while my classmates were playing. I didn't get a prize, but my friends really liked the pictures. They even put the best one on the club website!

Our Class Camping Trip
by Anna Lee, aged 12
Last month, our school planned a weekend camping trip to the green valley near the mountains. Twenty students went to learn about nature. I wanted to go because I love sleeping outdoors, but I was nervous because I thought it might rain. My parents said, “Don’t worry, just listen to your teachers,” so I packed my backpack with warm clothes.
On Friday afternoon, our teacher, Mr Brown, showed us how to build our tents safely in groups. My partner, Lucy, helped me carry the heavy bags to our camping spot. After that, we walked around the valley to collect different flowers for our science project, and everyone laughed a lot.
Saturday was sunny and quiet. In the morning, we drew pictures of the tall trees and the green grass near our camp. I added a funny bird to my picture, and Mr Brown said it was very good. We all shared our snacks and stories during lunch.
Saturday night was quite different and surprising. Heavy rain started to fall suddenly, and the wind blew hard against our tents. Water began to come inside, and our beds got wet. Mr Brown asked all of us to pack our bags quickly and move into a big wooden house nearby.
Now we are back at school, and I often think about that night. The storm was scary at first, but we stayed together in the warm wooden house and became much closer friends. I now love outdoor adventures, and I want to go on our next school trip next spring.
How did Anna feel about the camping trip at first?
What did Lucy do on Friday afternoon?
What does Anna say about her picture?
Her friends thought the trees were too small.
Why did Anna’s class leave their tents on Saturday night?
Thunderstorm made staying in the tents impossible.
What does Anna say about that night now?

The Secret of Lascaux Cave
In September 1940, four teenagers were walking in the south of France with their dog, Robot. Suddenly, the dog ran into the woods and disappeared. The boys wanted to out where it went, so they followed it down a deep hole. At the bottom, they were surprised to find a huge, dark cave.
The teenagers used a lamp to a look around. On the stone walls, they saw colourful paintings of wild horses that were thousands of years old! At first, they didn't want people in the village to know. However, they soon to show the cave to their history teacher, and he contacted experts.
Today, this cave is famous over the world. It was closed in 1963 to keep the paintings safe, but tourists can still about it at a modern museum nearby.
