Three teenagers talk about making things by hand

William Clark

I make my own clothes, like T-shirts and summer hats. I started this hobby last year when I watched an excellent video on my laptop. Sometimes it is quite difficult to make the clothes fit perfectly! I usually buy cheap material from the large market in our town, because I don't like shopping online. When a T-shirt is finished, I never sell it to my classmates. Instead, I always wear it myself to parties.

Mason Walker

I love building small cars and boats from wood. My grandfather is very good at this, so he taught me how to use the tools safely. I don't buy new materials from shops. Instead, I prefer walking in the local forest where I can find old pieces of wood. Making the models takes a long time, and I often spend weeks making one. I don't keep the finished toys in my bedroom, as I always give them to my little cousins.

Aria Scott

My hobby is making beautiful rings and necklaces. I didn't learn from my family, but my school art teacher showed me what to do. I live in a small village, so I always order the plastic pieces online. Choosing the right colours is the hardest part for me, although the size is usually fine. Everyone loves my jewellery! I often sell my best work to my classmates, which gives me extra pocket money.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

Lena's blog: our school newspaper

In September, our teacher, Mr Ford, asked, 'Who would like to make a school newspaper?' He said we could use the computer room after lessons. I write about my day in a diary every night, so I put my hand up first. Five other students joined me, including my best friend Ben.

At first, we only had three stories, but then Ben had an idea. He put a box in the library, and students could leave their own writing in it. Mr Ford only checked our spelling. Soon the box was full, and we had enough for four pages.

We talked a lot about how long the stories should be. Mr Ford told us, 'Busy students don't read long things, so no story should be longer than one page.' I wasn't sure because I love writing long stories, but in the end I agreed with him.

The first newspaper came out in October. I was worried because most students didn't know our stories. But by lunch nearly every student had one, and the most popular page was Ben's funny drawings of the teachers. Even Mr Ford laughed at his own picture!

Now we make a newspaper every month, and all six of us still come every Thursday. Last week, twelve more students asked to join, and Mr Ford says we will need a bigger room! I'm happy because so many people read my writing now.

Why did Lena put her hand up first?

  • She already enjoyed writing.
  • She wanted to use the computer room.
  • She hoped to become a teacher one day.

How did the group get more stories?

  • Mr. Ford wrote several stories for them.
  • Other students put their work in a special place.
  • They found some stories in the city library.

What does Mr. Ford say about the stories?

  • They should all be written in the library.
  • They should all be about school life.
  • They should be short enough to read quickly.

Why was Lena worried about the first newspaper?

  • Their work was new to other students.
  • Ben's drawings were quite terrible.
  • Mr. Ford did not like the stories.

What is TRUE about the newspaper according to the last paragraph?

  • The newspaper is becoming more popular with students.
  • The newspaper has already moved to a bigger room.
  • The newspaper will need fewer members next month.

For each question, choose the correct answer.
