Three teenagers talk about playing chess

Nora, 14

My grandfather taught me how to play chess last winter. He isn't a very good player now, so I usually win our games. I never feel sad when I lose, because it helps me improve. I wanted to practice more, so I bought an expensive wooden board with my birthday money to play with my friends. However, it is quite hard to find friends who want to play. These days, I mostly stay in my bedroom and play against a computer program on my tablet.

Omar, 13

I didn't know anything about chess until my maths teacher started a club at school. He showed me the rules, and now I go there every Wednesday afternoon. I usually play against teenagers who are much older than me, which is very difficult! We use the cheap plastic boards from the library. My dad hates playing chess, so I don't practice with him. Instead, I am showing my eight-year-old sister how to play, and she is learning quickly.

Sofia, 14

My dad has won many local chess competitions, and he is the best player in our family. He gave me a small board, and we often play together in the living room. I also practice with my twin brother, but he is much faster than me! When he wins a game, I get really angry and I don't want to talk to him. I hope I can join a club next year, so I can learn some new ways to win.

Sam's blog: a week on Uncle David's farm

Last August, my parents told me that I was going to spend a week at my Uncle David's farm in the countryside. I felt unhappy because there was no wifi and I could not play my favourite online games with my friends. I packed my bag on Sunday and felt bored during the long train journey there.

When I arrived on Monday morning, Uncle David gave me a warm glass of milk and showed me my bedroom. Then he asked me to help him feed the cows and chickens. At first, I was scared of the large horses, but Uncle David was very kind and taught me how to talk to them quietly.

On Wednesday, Uncle David gave me my first riding lesson. Riding a horse was much harder than I thought, but it was really exciting. We rode along a small river and through a beautiful green forest. I was looking at the tall trees and birds, and I completely forgot about my mobile phone!

By Friday, I was waking up early every morning without my alarm clock. I loved collecting fresh eggs and cleaning the horses. Uncle David said I was a great worker. I was surprised because I usually hate doing work at home in the city.

When my parents arrived on Sunday to take me home, I felt sad to say goodbye to Uncle David and the animals. I asked, 'Can I come back next summer for two weeks?' and Uncle David said yes.

Why was Sam unhappy about his parents' plan?

  • He did not know his uncle well.
  • He did not enjoy the train journey.
  • He could not go online there.

What does Sam say about the horses on his first day?

  • He was afraid of them at first.
  • They were much smaller than he thought.
  • Uncle David kept him away from them.

What does Sam say about riding a horse?

  • It was easy, and he soon felt bored.
  • It was difficult, but he enjoyed it.
  • It was fun, but he fell off.

Why was Sam surprised on Friday?

  • He enjoyed his time on the farm.
  • He woke up early for the first time.
  • Uncle David gave him a new job.

What do we learn about Sam at the end?

  • He was glad that the week was over.
  • He wanted his next visit to be longer.
  • His parents said he could stay two weeks.

For each question, choose the correct answer.

The Underwater Museum of Cancún

In 2010, an unusual museum called MUSA opened near the coast of Cancún in Mexico. Instead of walking through art rooms, visitors put on diving equipment and swim deep into the sea. The museum was created to help sea animals, and it has quickly a famous attraction for divers. Today, there are five hundred stone statues on the ocean floor, making it look like a city under the water.

If you want to visit MUSA, you must a trip with an official guide. Anyone who can swim well is to dive down and explore the area. For tourists who do not want to swim, special boats with glass bottoms leave from the beach every hour. From these boats, you can look at the statues through the clear floor. This means everyone can enjoy the art getting into the water.
