Three teenagers talk about a weekend camping trip

Selena, 13

My family planned to go camping on Saturday morning, but there was heavy rain, so we had to wait until Sunday. My dad brought his old tent, which was easy to build on the grass. In the afternoon, we walked on a high hill and saw some beautiful birds. In the evening, my mom taught me how to cook soup on a campfire. I loved the weekend so much that I'd like to camp again next month.

Amy, 14

My family went to a campsite in the woods last weekend. Our tent was near a small river, where we spent hours catching fish and swimming. My brother lent me his torch because I forgot mine. I expected to hear noises from the woods, so I was amazed by how peaceful it was at night. For dinner, we ate cold sandwiches that we brought from home. It was fun, but I prefer staying in a hotel next time.

Grace, 12

The weather was sunny all weekend when my family camped in a quiet forest. Before we left, I bought a warm sleeping bag at a local shop. My dad cooked some delicious pasta on a small cooker outside our tent. At night, we sat outside and looked at thousands of bright stars in the sky. We heard some dark forest sounds, which made me feel a bit scared. Because of this, my brother said he never wants to sleep in a tent again!

Priya's Saturday class

Every Saturday morning, the small library in Oakfield is full of people who are over 70. Their teacher is Priya Rao, and she is only 12 years old. Her first student was her grandfather, who bought a computer last year but was afraid to use it. Priya sat with him every evening until he could send messages to his sister in India.

Soon more people heard about it. A neighbour told her friends, and a month later Mrs Hill, who works at the library, offered Priya a free room on Saturdays. At first only four people came, but now there are nearly 20.

Priya has clear ideas about how to teach her class. 'Older people learn in a different way,' she explains. 'I never go fast, and I never say that something is easy. They write down what to do in their own notebooks, and we practise it again and again.'

Not everyone finds it easy, though. After two weeks, Mr. Collins, who is 78, nearly stopped coming. 'My fingers are too slow, and my mind forgets everything,' he told Priya. She listened carefully and then gave him a bigger notebook with large letters.

Next month, the lessons will stop for three weeks because Priya is going on a school trip. Mr Collins does not seem worried at all. 'I'll practise every day,' he says, 'and I'll show everyone my emails when we start again.'

  • A teacher at school asked her to help.
  • The library gave her a job on Saturdays.
