Three students talk about their journey to school

Ian

I ride my bicycle to school every day, and my journey only takes ten minutes. My little brother rides his bike with me, but he is sometimes quite slow! When it is raining, my dad drives us to school before he goes to work. I usually want to listen to music, but my mum says that phones are dangerous when riding a bike. We always wear helmets, which is a good idea. I think cycling is a great way to start the day.

Ruby

My older sister and I take the bus to school because our house is quite far away. The journey takes about twenty minutes. On the bus, I usually read my notes to prepare for the lessons I have that day. I buy a ticket every month, so I don't need to pay any money every day. Sometimes the bus is late when it rains, but we are never late for school.

Sam

I walk to school every morning, and my journey takes nearly thirty minutes. I always wait for my best friend at the corner of my street, and then we go together. We often talk about the films or programmes on TV or the difficult homework. This makes the long walk fun! If it rains, we put on a raincoat and walk quickly! I haven't got a bicycle, so I hope to get one on my next birthday.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

My new school swimming club
By Ethan Brooks

When my family moved to a new town, I did not know anybody at my school, so I wanted to join an after-school club. I visited two other clubs first. Then I walked past the pool and saw everybody in the water laughing and racing each other. The club cost only two pounds a week, so I put my name on the list.

In my first lesson, I felt worried because I could not swim very well. But Mrs Dawson, the coach, made it easy. She gives each of us a small goal for the week. We only try something new when we have done the last goal.

The club members come from many different classes, and some are much older than me. At first I only knew their names. Now two boys from the club sit with me at lunch every day, and one of them lives on my street. We even meet at weekends to practise.

In March, we had our first competition against other schools. I could not wait for it to start! Before the race, my hands felt cold, but in the water I swam my fastest time ever. I only came fourth, and nobody gave me a prize, but I did not mind at all.

Last summer, moving house felt like a big problem. This year I started the school term without any worry at all, and I even told two new students about the club. I still play football with my old team on Sundays, but I would not stop swimming for anything.

Why did Ethan join the swimming club?

  • The members in the pool looked very happy.
  • He did not have to pay to join the club.
  • He found the other clubs completely boring.

What is the passage mainly about?

  • why swimming is more enjoyable than other school sports

  • how a student trained hard to win a competition

  • how joining a swimming club helped a new student

How did Ethan feel after his first competition?

  • unhappy because he received no prize
  • pleased because he swam faster than before
  • worried because he finished in fourth place

Why does the author mention the small targets set by Mrs. Dawson?

  • To explain that swimmers only need to learn one single skill
  • To prove that swimming is the most difficult sport at school
  • To show how the coach helped him build confidence step by step

We can learn from the final paragraph that Ethan ______.

  • was disappointed with his performance in the recent race

  • feels much more comfortable at his school now

  • wants to become a professional athlete in the future

For each question, choose the correct answer.

A Different Kind of School

Most teenagers go to normal schools, but some choose to do something completely different. At the London Circus School, young people study circus skills instead of ordinary subjects. The students practise for several every afternoon. They learn how to objects like plates and balls high into the air without breaking them.

Walking on a high wire is another exciting activity. Students have to be very to do this, and they always use special equipment to stay safe. It is not easy, but the teachers are helpful and patient. By the end of the year, everyone is to perform. The school organises a big in the summer. It is a wonderful chance for the young performers to their families to watch them.
