Three teenagers talk about their favorite subject at school

Steven

Science has been my favorite subject since last year, and I always enjoy the classes. We do exciting projects in a big lab every week. Our teacher sometimes speaks very fast, but he always answers my questions. He told us about a great website with videos so that we can learn more at home. My brother likes to help me with my homework, but I prefer working on my own. I hope to study science at university.

Rose

Music is the subject I like best because our lessons are always fun. I play the guitar, and our teacher allows us to play our favorite songs during class. Last month, our class played at a local festival and won a beautiful silver cup! I practice every evening after dinner in my bedroom. I often watch music videos on the internet to practice. My parents bought me a new guitar last week, and I was so happy because I didn't know about it! I want to join a famous band in the future.

Justin

Art is my favorite subject. We learn how to make wooden objects and fix things that break at home, like chairs or shelves. In our lessons, we usually work in small groups with older students from another class, so we can learn from them. My teacher says that my drawings are getting much better. I don't have many tools at home, so I do most of my projects at school.

Children's book artist

Ana Lopez lives in Seville, Spain. She has drawn the pictures for books about the sea and farm animals. Right now, she is busy with a new book about birds.

Ana, why did you begin drawing?
Nobody in my family drew pictures. But at 13, I found my grandfather's old art books, and I looked at them every night. At 18, I left home to study at an art school in Madrid on my own. That was a very bad year for me, because I was shy and I never asked for help.

When did you begin working on books?
I have always loved telling stories, even as a small child. At 20, I drew pictures for my university magazine, and then I began sending my work to book companies. In the beginning, no company wanted to pay for my pictures, and I got a lot of letters saying no. Things slowly got better, but it took about three years.

Which part of your job is hard?
I can draw for ten hours a day, and then I am too tired to answer my emails. Money is a problem too. I will never stop drawing, but later in my life I might have to teach art classes two evenings a week to pay my bills.

Which part of your job do you enjoy most?
Children write to me after reading my books, and many of them send me their own pictures. Last month, a boy of six sent me a picture of a dog with five legs! That makes me very happy.

As a teenager, Ana _____.

  • became interested in art
  • studied art with her grandfather
  • spent her nights reading art books

What does Ana say about her first year at art school?

  • She was too shy to make new friends.
  • It was more fun than she expected.
  • She had a very difficult year there.

When Ana was 20, she couldn't _____.

  • find anyone to buy her work

  • earn enough money to pay for university
  • draw as often as she wanted to

In the future, Ana thinks she might _____.

  • earn much more money from drawing

  • get another job as well

  • stop drawing and do something else

What does Ana like most about her job?

  • Teaching art to children

  • Drawing pictures of farm animals

  • Seeing pictures from young readers

For each question, choose the correct answer.

The Art of Making Pottery

Pottery is one of the oldest crafts in the world. Today, making objects out of clay has become a popular hobby for people who want to after a busy week.

To make a simple cup or bowl, you first place a soft piece of clay in the of a spinning wheel. You must be when shaping the clay, as moving your hands too fast can easily ruin the shape. After the piece is ready, it needs to dry for several days before going into a special hot oven. This process makes the clay so it will not break easily. Finally, artists can paint their pots with colours. Local art centres often lessons for beginners who want to try this fun activity.

Read the emails. For each question, write the correct answer. Write ONE word for each gap.
