Three teenagers talk about their favorite TV shows

Ivy

I love a great travel programme about interesting cities around the world. My best friend told me about it last month. I also read her travel blogs. While I watch the show after school, I usually eat fresh apples or grapes because they are healthy. My younger brother always watches sports on the television in the living room, so I use my laptop in my bedroom. I often watch the show when I have free time after school.

Alice

I watch a cooking show called Junior Chef. I enjoy it with my grandfather every week. He always makes popcorn for us to eat, and we sit together on the sofa in front of the television. I try to finish all my homework every evening before the show starts at eight o'clock. The young cooks make amazing meals, and I hope to enter the competition myself next year. I think cooking is a fantastic skill, so I practice making simple dishes on Sundays.

Tiana

My favorite program is a nature show about wild animals, which is on television every Saturday evening. I always watch it with my mother while drinking a glass of fruit juice. I found this show by myself on the internet last year. Last week, I bought a big book about ocean animals because I wanted to learn more about them. I think it's important to look after nature, so I'd like to work with wild animals when I grow up.

A Bike Trip to the Old Town
by Ben Carter, aged 12

Last Saturday, our class went on a bike trip to the old town by the river. I joined the trip because I wanted to get stronger for football. My best friend, Omar, came too, but he rides his bike to school every day and I do not. I felt slow next to him.

Before we left school, Ms Green, our teacher, gave every student a map and asked us to ride in pairs. Omar’s mother also gave Omar and me sandwiches for lunch. Then we rode along a quiet road next to the river, and the weather was warm.

At twelve o’clock, we arrived in the old town and ate our sandwiches by the river. After lunch, we visited a small museum. I thought museums were boring, but this one was full of old bikes and I loved it. Omar took a photo of me next to the oldest bike.

On the way home, something was wrong with my bike. It became very hard to ride, and I had to stop. Omar and the others stopped too, and Ms Green looked at my bike. She said it needed a new part, so I walked next to her and pushed my bike for two kilometres. I felt bad because everybody was waiting for me.

Now I ride my bike to school every day, like Omar. My legs are stronger, and I am not slow anymore. Last week, Ms. Green told us about a longer trip in the summer, and I really want to go.

Why did Ben join the bike trip?

  • His best friend advised him to go.
  • He wanted to improve for a sport.
  • He wanted to visit a small museum.

What do we learn about the ride to the old town?

  • It was a good day for riding.
  • The group thought it was too crowded.
  • Ms. Green rode in front of everybody.

What did Ben think about the museum?

  • It was too far from the river.
  • It had a nice place outside for lunch.
  • It was more fun than he thought.

How did Ben feel about the problem with his bike?

  • Sorry that his friends had to stop.
  • Angry that it took him longer to come back.
  • Afraid that it was too dark.

What does Ben say about his riding now?

  • He has bought a new bike.
  • He now goes to school by bike.
  • He rides much faster than Omar now.

For each question, choose the correct answer.

Camels

Camels are large animals that live in hot, dry deserts around the . The desert is too hot for most animals to live in, but camels do very well. People use them to heavy bags and equipment because they are really strong.

A camel has one or two tall humps on its back. Many people believe these humps are full of water, but they actually hold fat. When there is no food, the camel's body this fat into energy. These amazing animals can travel a long without drinking any water. They also have thick fur because the desert is often when the sun goes down. Today, tourists also enjoy riding camels to explore the desert. It is certainly a fun and unusual !
