Three teenagers talk about collecting things
Lily Phillips
Lily collects old postcards, which she keeps in a large book. She started her hobby when her grandad gave her a beautiful postcard from when he was a boy. Now, she usually buys them at weekend markets. Lily puts them in order of the day she bought each. She loves looking at the beautiful pictures, and she never swaps them with anyone because she wants to keep every single one.
Aurora Campbell
Aurora collects unusual cups, and she has over fifty of them on her bedroom shelves. She puts them in colour order, which looks fantastic. She started this hobby after buying a lovely cup on a family holiday. Now, she doesn't need to spend her own money on them, because her friends always bring her new ones as gifts. Aurora takes them down to the kitchen every Sunday and washes them carefully in warm water. She has plenty of space for more! It is a great hobby.
Sofia Baker
Sofia collects very big concert posters, which her dad often brings home from the theatre where he works. However, she actually began collecting after buying one at a rock music festival. Sofia often chats with other collectors on the internet, and they send their extra posters to each other. She puts them on the walls in her bedroom, and now they are nearly full. She really wants to continue her hobby, but she needs to find somewhere else to put them!
Who exchanges items from her collection with other people?
Who arranges her items by the date she gets them?
Who needs more room to display her items?
Who got the first item for her collection during a family trip?
Who got the first item for her collection from a family member?
Who gets new things as presents from friends?
Who started her hobby after going to a music event?

Sam's Seaside Cycling Trip
Last month, my neighbour Mr Martin asked me to join a twenty-kilometre cycle ride with him. Every rider paid five pounds to buy equipment for cleaning our local beach. At first, I felt quite confident and agreed quickly, but cycling by the sea was harder than I imagined. The wind was strong, and my legs felt tired after only four kilometres.
We practised twice a week along the river path. Mr Martin rode a heavy black bicycle, and he always stayed several metres ahead of me. After two weeks, I was still the slower rider, but he smiled and said, "Do not worry, Sam! Daily practice will make you stronger."
On the day of the ride, the sky was dark, and many cyclists moved very fast. Mr Martin looked at me and said, "Ride slowly near the start. Then we will have enough energy for the final hills." So we cycled carefully along the coast and soon passed several tired groups.
Near the fifteenth kilometre, my bicycle chain broke, and I stopped beside a stone wall. Mr Martin was far ahead, but he immediately rode back and repaired my chain. He said, "We started together, so we will finish together."
We arrived at the beach late in the afternoon, and our friends shouted, "Well done, team!" Now everyone asks about our trip, and I plan to take part in another seaside event with Mr Martin next spring.
Why didn't Sam feel good after accepting the invitation?
What does Sam say about Mr Martin in the second paragraph?
He stayed behind Sam during practice.
He rode a very modern and light bicycle.
What did Mr Martin advise Sam to do at the start of the trip?
Follow the fastest riders closely

Save strength for later in the ride
Why did Sam stop by a stone wall?
How did Sam's feelings about cycling change by the end?
