Highfield Library

Highfield Library is in an old building near the park, and it has a very modern computer room. Visitors can use the laptops without paying, which is great for school projects. The library is closed on Mondays, but it opens on Sundays from one to five. On Saturday mornings, a teacher reads fun stories to young children. The children love this! There isn't a café inside, but visitors can buy cold drinks from a machine. You can park your car in the small space when you visit.

Millwood Library

Millwood Library is very popular with local people because it is just two minutes from the railway station. It is open every day except Sunday. Inside, there is a special shelf where you can buy books for only one pound. The library has many computers for everyone. If you want to use them, you must pay a little money. There are no hot meals, but visitors can get warm tea and biscuits at the desk. Many teenagers come here after school so they can study together.

Stonebridge Library

Stonebridge Library is a large building with three floors, which is in the town centre. Outside, there is a lovely quiet garden where people can sit and read under the trees. Visitors really enjoy the fantastic café on the ground floor. There are lots of story books for children, but there are no reading events. The main bus stop is right in front of the door, so it is easy to visit. The library is open from Monday to Saturday. When it gets dark, it closes at six o'clock.

Alex's Concert Ticket

Last year, I really wanted to see my favourite pop band in concert. The tickets were quite expensive, so I saved my money for three months and washed my neighbours' cars to earn extra cash. When I finally bought my ticket online, I felt so happy.

The concert was on a Saturday, and I woke up early to get ready. However, the weather was terrible that day. In the morning, the sky was very dark, and after lunch, the wind became very strong. When it started to rain hard, I began to feel worried.

At three o'clock, I checked the band's website on my mobile phone. I saw a new message for all the fans. It said that the band could not play that night because of the bad storm. It was not safe for people to travel, and I felt very upset.

I hoped they would just change the date to the next weekend. However, the message explained that the band had to travel to another country on Sunday. Because of this, there was no new date for the show. I will get my money back, but I only wanted the music.

I stayed in my bedroom for the rest of the evening. I listened to the band's songs on my laptop, but it was not the same as a real concert. It was a horrible end to my weekend, but I hope they will visit my city again next year.

How did Alex get enough money for the ticket?

  • By doing jobs for people near his home

  • By asking his parents for pocket money

  • By selling some old things on the internet

When did Alex begin to feel worried?

  • When he read the message on the website.
  • When the rain began to come down heavily.

  • When he noticed the dark sky that morning.

What did the band say in their message?

  • The concert hall had flooded in the storm.

  • The band members were too ill to perform.

  • The storm made travel unsafe for the fans.

Why was the concert NOT moved to the following weekend?

  • They could not agree on a new date with the hall.

  • The band already had plans to perform in another stage.

  • The terrible weather conditions were not getting better.

What can we learn about Alex from the story?

  • He works hard to get what he wants.

  • He finds it easy to forget his problems.

  • He is upset and no longer enjoys the band.

For each question, choose the correct answer.

White Whales

White whales, also known as Belugas, live in the cold waters of the Arctic Ocean. When baby whales are born, their bodies are dark grey. However, their colour slowly as they grow older, until they become completely white. These clever animals are famous for making many kinds of sounds under the water. People often call them "sea canaries" because their high songs sound like wild birds.

Belugas also have special necks that are different from other ocean animals. This allows them to their heads from side to side while swimming. They are very friendly and love playing with each other in large family . In the dark water under the ice, group members must always stay together. Mother whales often use their famous songs to their babies across the frozen sea.

Hi Alex,

My trip (0) to the sea was fantastic. Yesterday, we went a small boat because we wanted to see wild dolphins. At first, it was very quiet and we didn't see dolphins at all.

But then, my uncle pointed at the water. We very surprised to see a big grey dolphin near us! swam next to our boat for about ten minutes. Our guide told us to listen the sounds it made.

You can sometimes see sea birds there too. I will show you my photos soon!

Bye,

Jamie
