Three students talk about their after-school clubs

Zara, 12

Zara goes to the school art club every Monday afternoon. She always puts on a large, old shirt because she doesn't want to get paint on her uniform. The club meets in the art room, and they usually draw or paint animals. Zara loves bringing her younger sister along because they both enjoy drawing. They often get hungry after lessons, so Zara packs some chocolate biscuits in her bag to share.

Mei, 13

Mei is a member of the computer club, which meets on Tuesdays. The group uses the school library, so they must be very quiet while they work on making simple video games. Before she goes in, Mei always stops at the school shop to buy a packet of crisps, because she is usually very hungry. She sits with her neighbour, who is in the same class as her. Mei likes wearing a soft, comfortable sweater while she types on her laptop.

Chloe, 14

Chloe spends her Friday afternoons at the school gardening club. They meet in the yard to plant different vegetables and take care of the trees. Chloe doesn't have any classmates or friends there, but she likes meeting new people from other classes. She has to wear thick gloves to keep her hands clean while she works on the ground. When the club finishes, Chloe often picks a sweet apple from one of the trees and eats it. It's a great, healthy snack!

Ben’s Blog: My Wooden Toys

I live in a small village. Behind our house, my dad has a big garage where he makes things from wood. When I was young, I couldn’t use his tools because they were dangerous. But I loved sitting quietly in the garage and watching him make tables and chairs for our home.

On my twelfth birthday, Dad gave me my own tools. They were small and safe. He showed me how to use them, and I started making little things. My first toy was a wooden car. I painted it red and blue, and I was very happy with it. I gave it to my cousin, and he played with it all day.

After that, I made more wooden animals and trains. My friends at school saw them and wanted some too. I made toys for them, but I didn’t want any money. Instead, I asked them to bring me old wood from their homes.

Now I work in the garage almost every Saturday afternoon. Sometimes my school work is difficult. Making toys helps me relax and stop worrying about exams. My parents are happy because I’m learning something useful, and I’m not playing video games all the time. Next, I’m going to learn how to make small boats!
