Three teenagers talk about buying their clothes

Chloe Smith

I usually go shopping for clothes in town with my mum on Saturday afternoons. I always ask for her opinion because she knows what looks good on me. Actually, I save my weekly pocket money for a long time, so I can get exactly what I want. My favourite things to buy are trainers, and I have five pairs in my bedroom! I often spend hours trying them on before I choose. I prefer wearing black and white, so I rarely buy anything pink or red.

Maya Patel

I don't really like walking around busy shopping centres. Instead, I buy almost all my clothes on the internet while I am sitting on my bed. It is very easy, and I can quickly find the lowest prices. I love bright colours, so my wardrobe is full of yellow and green T-shirts. My older sister sometimes gives me her old dresses, but they are usually too big for me. If a new piece of clothing is wrong, I just return it.

Sophie Jones

Last week was my birthday, and my grandparents gave me some money. I am going to the large shopping centre tomorrow to spend it. I prefer going there with my best friends, because my parents always want to look at boring things. We often look at clothes online first, but I need to see them in real life. I hate trying clothes on in the shop. So, I usually just buy jackets, which I can wear immediately.

The Film I Did Not Enjoy

Posted by Hannah, age 14

I love films, so I was very excited last Saturday. My friend Priya and I went to the cinema to see the new film that everybody was talking about. It had three famous actors, and my brother had already seen it. He said it was very good. We bought some sweets and found seats near the front.

At first, I loved it. The sea looked so blue, and the pictures were beautiful. However, after thirty minutes, I did not understand the story. A woman was in a city, then she was on a mountain, and nobody told us why. A man said goodbye to everyone, but he came back the next day, and nobody asked why. I looked at Priya, and she asked, "Do you know what is happening?" I said no.

The film was two and a half hours long. I kept looking at the clock because I wanted to know when it would finish. When we came out of the cinema, we were tired and confused. Priya said, "It looked great, but the story did not make sense."

I felt very disappointed. I decided not to go to the cinema for a while. On Sunday morning, I was eating cereal in the living room, and my brother was watching a simple cartoon. I did not plan to watch it, but I sat next to him. I laughed a lot, and I felt happy again.

I think a good film does not need a difficult or clever story. It only needs a story that people can follow and enjoy. Famous actors and beautiful pictures are not enough.

Why did Hannah want to see the film?

  • She wanted to see her favorite actors.

  • Her brother bought cinema tickets for her.

  • Other people told her it was wonderful.

During the film, Priya asked Hannah _____.

  • if she understood the story
  • what time the film would finish

  • if she wanted some more sweets

How long was the film?

  • Half an hour.
  • Two and a half hours.
  • Three hours.

How did watching the cartoon with her brother help Hannah?

  • It helped her understand the film from Saturday.
  • It made her realize simple stories can be fun.
  • It made her want to go back to the cinema.
How did Hannah feel about the film during the first half an hour?
  • She thought it was too slow and boring.

  • She liked it because the pictures looked great.
  • She liked the mountain pictures more than the city ones.

For each question, choose the correct answer.

The Ballpoint Pen

For a very long time, writing with old pens was difficult and often made paper dirty. In the 1930s, a journalist named László Bíró noticed that newspaper pages dried very quickly. So, he and his brother working together on a new kind of pen. They made a special tool with a small metal ball at the end.

The rolling metal ball had to be exactly the right . As the ball moved across the paper, the pen wrote cleanly without leaking. During the 1940s, airplane pilots loved these pens because it was to write high in the sky.

Today, people across the world millions of these cheap pens every year. You can easily find them in every classroom and in every worker's . This simple invention became a huge all over the world.
