Three teenagers talk about their weekend jobs

Emma

I have worked in a busy café since January. My day begins at half past seven. It is quite hard to wake up, but I get a free breakfast when I arrive. I clean the tables, which can be tiring, and the music is always very loud. I get no discount for my drinks. I am saving all my money for a school trip to Spain next year. My best friend works there too, so we have a lot of fun together.

John

On Sunday afternoons, I take my neighbour's three dogs for a long walk in the local park. I really enjoy spending my time outside, but it isn't much fun when it rains. It is usually very quiet there. I want to buy a new mountain bike, so I need to earn some cash. Before winter arrives, I hope to find a different weekend job in a warm supermarket!

Jenny

I love sports, so I was really happy to get a job in a sports shop. I work at the cash desk with my older sister, and she always helps me if I make a mistake! The shop is full of people, but it is never too noisy. The best thing is that I can buy trainers for a much lower price. I don't want to work anywhere else, although I usually finish quite late.

Clara's Blog

Do you know a good place to get your hair cut? I do! It is called Top Cut, and it opened only a few months ago. Because it is new, it is never crowded, and that is the main reason my mum and I love going there. It costs a little more than other places, but the people there cut hair very well. I want to go again before my school dance next month!

Top Cut is not in the town centre with all the busy shops and cafes, but it is quite simple to find it. It is on a long road out of town, and lorries and cars go past all day. Luckily, you can park right in front of the door.

When you go in, someone takes your coat and says hello. Another person gives you a drink and takes you to your chair. The walls are bright green, so the room looks lovely. There is often quiet pop music, too.

There is a big book of pictures on the table. Many of the hair cuts are simple, and my friends have them at school. But when I sit in the chair, I can never choose, because they all look great! Mum always tells me what to do, but I like to choose for myself.

My older sister wants to cut hair too. She is learning now, and last week she cut my hair at home. I said thank you, but I still want Top Cut for my school dance!

Why do Clara and her mum like Top Cut?

  • There are usually few people there.
  • It is cheaper than other places.
  • It can help Clara get ready for her dance.
