Three beaches to visit this summer

Sunny Cove

Sunny Cove is a fantastic place for families with young children because there are no big waves. You can swim safely, but it isn't a good spot for surfing. There are no hot meals available, so most visitors buy ice cream or cold drinks. If the weather is very sunny, you can rent large umbrellas to stay cool on the sand. It is easy to drive there, and visitors do not have to pay to use the car park.

White Sand Bay

This beach is famous for its big waves, which means it is perfect for exciting water sports like surfing. After a long day in the water, everyone loves using the modern public showers before they go home. When you get hungry, the fantastic fish restaurant serves excellent hot dishes. The beach gets very busy at weekends, so you should arrive early. Drivers have to pay five pounds to leave their cars, but the ticket is cheaper after three o'clock.

Rocky Point

Rocky Point is a quiet place that is famous for its beautiful nature. Because there are no roads to this beach, visitors must leave their cars in the village and walk down a long path. Children enjoy exploring the small pools of water, where they can find interesting fish and sea birds. There are no trees or umbrellas, so remember to bring a hat. The small café doesn't cook any food, but it sells great cold sandwiches and drinks.

Kate Dunn talks about living in Sydney

I live in the middle of Sydney, and I love how busy it is. At six in the morning, there are already runners on the beach, and at midnight, people are still having dinner. Famous people visit the city too.

When I was young, an old neighbour taught me to cook in her kitchen. At first I was afraid of her because she was very serious, and her recipes were difficult. After a few months, I understood why she was like that. I learned many things from her that I still use in my job.

When friends visit me, I like to show them the city. There are trams and buses, but we usually walk along the harbour or ride bikes. It is faster than waiting in the traffic. I have a small car, but I hardly ever use it, because it is difficult to find a place to park.

My favourite building is the Harbour Museum, right by the water. Last winter I cooked for two hundred people at a dinner there. It was the most exciting night of my career. When I go there with friends, we look at the old boats first, but I always end up telling them about that evening.

Next month I am leaving to make a TV programme in six different countries. I want to cook in new places and learn about the food that people eat there. I will be away for six months, but my family will visit me twice, so I think I will be fine.

What does Kate like most about living in the centre?

  • The city is busy early and late.
  • Many famous people live near her.
  • She often runs on the beach.

How does Kate feel now about her first cooking lessons?

  • She is still afraid of her old neighbour.
  • She is happy that she was never afraid.
  • She is glad about what her neighbour taught her.

How do Kate and her friends usually travel around the city?

  • By tram or bus.
  • On a bike or on foot.
  • In her small car.

Why does Kate like the Harbour Museum so much?

  • She likes the old boats more than anything.
  • It is where she learned to cook.
  • Something important in her work happened there.

What can we say about Kate and her family?

  • They will see each other during her trip.
  • They will go on the trip with her.
  • Her family is unhappy about her new job.

For each question, choose the correct answer.

Mary Anning
