Three teenagers talk about doing sports

Amber

I joined a local running club last year because my best friend was in it. However, I was much slower than everyone else, and some teenagers made fun of me during practice. That made me very sad, so I left the club after a few weeks. Now I prefer going for long walks in the countryside by myself. I feel much happier when I can exercise at my own speed without any group around me.

Megan

I played volleyball for my school team for three years, and we won many competitions together. Sadly, I broke my arm in a bad accident last winter. The doctor says I cannot play ball games anymore. It is really difficult for me because I miss my old team so much. A girl in my class told me about a free chess club. It doesn't cost anything to join, so I think I will give it a try this year.

Harry

I enjoy playing soccer, but I get very annoyed when people talk loudly or laugh while I am playing. I prefer quiet sports like golf or sailing because everyone stays calm and quiet. I would really love to try ice skating or horse riding next term, but my parents say those activities cost too much money. My football shoes already cost a lot. I cannot ask for more.

Who is planning to start a new activity soon?

Lily's Blog: The Perfect Party Jacket

I love looking at clothes websites, but the clothes are usually too expensive. Last month, I was invited to a big birthday party, and I really wanted a special silver jacket that I saw online. But I did not have enough pocket money for it. So I decided to make my own jacket from some old clothes in my cupboard.

I took a pair of scissors and cut my old jeans and a blue shirt. Then I put the pieces together with strong glue, but it was a terrible mistake! The jacket looked like an old bag, and I cut a big hole in my favourite blue shirt. I sat on the floor in my bedroom and wanted to cry, because I had nothing to wear to the party.

Just then, my grandmother came into my room. I told her what happened, and she was not angry. Instead, she sat down next to me. She showed me how to cut the old clothes carefully and how to put the pieces together. We even used the best parts of my old blue shirt to make cool pockets for the jacket.

I wore my new jacket to the party on Saturday, and everyone loved it! Many girls asked me where I bought it. I was very happy. Now, I do not go shopping for new things. At weekends, I make new clothes from old ones. I have learned that making something myself is often better than spending lots of money in shops.

Why did Lily decide to make her own jacket?

  • She wanted to copy a jacket from a magazine.
  • She had too little money for the silver jacket.
  • She wanted to learn how to make clothes from her grandmother.

What went wrong with Lily’s first jacket?

  • She cut her finger with the scissors.
  • The glue did not work on her jacket.
  • The jacket looked horrible.

How did Lily’s grandmother help her?

  • She taught Lily how to make the jacket well.
  • She bought Lily a new sewing machine to use.
  • She went to a shop to buy cool pockets.

At the party, the other girls _____.

  • wanted to make jackets like Lily's
  • asked Lily where she found her old jeans
  • believed Lily bought her jacket from a shop

What is the main message of Lily’s blog?

  • Old clothes are usually much nicer than new clothes.

  • Making things yourself is sometimes better than buying them.
  • Grandmothers are the best people to go shopping with.
