Three teenagers talk about their art classes
Kenji
I go to an art group on Saturday mornings. My uncle is the teacher, so I don't need to give him any money for the lessons. We usually stay inside his warm house, which is great when the weather is bad. I enjoy drawing funny animals, but I don't use pens or paper. Instead, I do everything on a new tablet. When I am older, I hope to design video games.
Owen
Every Sunday, I meet my school art teacher in the city centre for a painting class. He shows us how to paint tall buildings and busy streets. We always paint in the park, even when it is quite cold. I use my pocket money to pay for the lessons, but they aren't very expensive. I often use different colours in my paintings. I hope to put my best pictures in a local show next year.
Mateo
I really love drawing people, so I joined a special class last month. The teacher is a famous artist in our town who paints beautiful pictures. The lessons are usually expensive, but I pay a lower price because I am a student. We always work in a large room with big windows. I only need a grey pencil for my work, while other teenagers prefer using bright paints. I often spend hours on each drawing, so I must work slowly!
Who uses only one colour for his pictures?
Who takes his lessons outdoors?
Who spends a long time finishing a picture?
Who gets his lessons for free?
Who has a teacher that many people know?
Who wants other people to see his pictures next year?
Who uses a device to make his art?
Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.
Leah's Blog: The Ten Bridges Run
I have just finished the Ten Bridges Run! This is a famous race through our city where runners cross ten different bridges over the river. I decided to do it because my school library needs some new books, and I wanted to collect money to help. I didn't run alone; I joined a local running club. It is very easy to get lost in the small city streets, so they had a guide who ran in front to show us the way.
When we stood at the first bridge, I was quite worried. I thought the race would be much too difficult for me. However, after the first two bridges, I realised it was actually easier than I expected. The race always takes place in the summer, so we expected lovely sunshine.
The first nine bridges were wonderful. But, while we were running towards the final bridge, heavy rain suddenly started falling. The wind was extremely strong and I felt really nervous. Nobody got hurt, but we were completely wet and freezing cold by the time we finished!
I still had a great time, even in the terrible weather. I didn't speak to anyone because everybody was running so fast, but I loved looking at the city from every bridge. Running so far in the rain taught me a lot. If you want to do a city run, remember that comfortable clothes are important.
