Three teenagers talk about learning a language
Lisa
I am learning Spanish, so I often watch films from Spain on my new tablet. I usually stay in my bedroom because I prefer to watch them alone. The actors speak very fast! I always turn on the English text at the bottom of the screen, which helps me understand the story. When I see an interesting word, I write it down in a small notebook. I have learned a lot of things this way.
Chris
I love watching French cartoons. I watch them on the big television in our living room. My older brother always sits with me, and we try to repeat the sentences loudly. I never read English words on the screen because I want to practice listening. I can understand the simple conversations, but the jokes are usually too difficult for me! I usually watch the cartoons a second time to learn new words and grammar.
Laura
My classmate often comes to my house. We watch Japanese video clips on my smartphone. We think the stories are very funny, but looking at a small screen makes my eyes really tired. I prefer reading the text in Japanese, not English, because it helps my reading skills. After the videos finish, we always use a dictionary to check the new words together. We learn Japanese to get ready for our trip to Japan next summer!

My name is Hannah and I am 13. This summer my mum and I rode horses across Iceland for six days. We have ridden horses in Wales since I was little, but this trip was much longer than anything we did before. Planning took months. It included a few weekends of training at a riding school in Germany.
Many people ride in Iceland because the country is so beautiful, with black beaches and big mountains. Our reason was that the horses carry your bags. You only need a small bag of your own. There is also little rain in summer, but we found out later that this summer was very wet.
Some travel companies only sell trips for groups of four or more, and there were only two of us. I was worried that we could not go. But a small company in Iceland let us join a group of eight people, because two riders could not come.
Riding for six hours a day can be hard because some people get very tired. I was fine, but others in our group wanted to go home, including Mum. So I had to help her. The wind also took her hat away, and her ears got very cold. I gave her my scarf to keep her warm. It was my best trip ever, and I would like to do it again soon.
Where did Hannah and her mum practise before the trip?
Why did Hannah and her mum want to ride across Iceland?
Hannah found it hard to book the trip because _____.
many trips needed more than two people
the small company in Iceland said no
she did not ride well enough
Hannah says that some people in the group _____.
got very tired and wanted to stop

Galapagos Tortoises
The Galapagos tortoise is an amazing animal that lives on a of islands in the Pacific Ocean. It is the largest tortoise in the world, and some of them weigh over 400 kilograms.
Because their bodies are so heavy, these animals move extremely slowly. They spend most of the day resting in the warm sun or for grass and plants to eat. Interestingly, they can live for many months without drinking any water.
They have very long lives, and some tortoises are more than 100 years ! When a Galapagos tortoise feels afraid, it pulls its head and legs inside its shell to safe. Scientists are working hard to these wonderful creatures and sure they do not disappear forever.
