Sometimes, Dave buys a large pizza for them to share, and the neighbour buys drinks. It is always a fun evening!

They quickly became good friends because they both love playing tennis at the local club. Last Saturday, the boy's parents invited Finn to their garden and cooked some hot burgers for everyone. The family doesn't have any animals, although they really like dogs. Finn feels very lucky.

Alex, 12

Alex's neighbour is an old lady who has lived in the street for a long time. She keeps two large cats that sleep on her sofa all day. Leo - Young Photographer of the Year

Fifteen-year-old Leo has just won the Young Photographer of the Year competition. He loves taking photos of wild animals, but when he was younger, he lived in the middle of a busy city. There were no strange birds or insects near his home, so he had to travel a long way into the countryside to find them.

Leo's grandfather bought him his first camera. Leo thought taking pictures would be quick and simple. "It wasn't easy," he says. "I often waited quietly in the forest for hours just to see one small bird. But I always loved being close to nature, even when I got cold and wet."

Leo takes fantastic pictures, but he wants to understand more about his subjects. He hopes to go to university to study biology when he is older. "I think that knowing how animals live will help me to find them more easily," he says. "I still have a lot to learn."

When he got the first prize in the competition, Leo was really amazed. During his favourite trip to the mountains, it rained a lot and it was quite dark. Because of the terrible weather, he was sure his pictures were going to be very bad.

Now, Leo is getting ready for his next adventure in other countries. He is going to visit the rainforest in South America next summer with his photography club. Because of this, he wants to read lots of books about the wildlife there before he leaves.

What problem did Leo have when he was younger?

  • He had to go far to see wild animals.
  • He didn't have a camera of his own.
  • He didn't like living in a busy city.

What does Leo say about taking photos at the beginning?

  • It was quite boring.
  • It took a lot of time.
  • He only wanted to photograph small birds.

Leo believes that studying biology will _____.

  • help him get a job at a university

  • give him more time to learn about cameras

  • make it easier to take photos of wildlife

How did Leo feel about winning the competition?

  • Unhappy
  • Surprised
  • Proud

What is Leo planning to do next?

  • Travel to another place
  • Start his own photography club
  • Write a book about wild animals

For each question, choose the correct answer.

Komodo Dragons

Komodo dragons are the largest lizards in the world, living only in Indonesia. Adult dragons are very , so people must stay far away from them. They do not hunt in groups, and these wild creatures usually prefer to live . When a dragon catches an animal, it eats a huge meal of meat. Because of this, it can easily live for a very time without eating again.

Because adult dragons are so large and strong, other wild animals cannot them. However, life is difficult for baby dragons because their mother never stays with her babies. She just finds a safe for her eggs and walks away. These eggs about eight months to break open, and the babies must live by themselves.
