Three teenagers talk about packing their bags for a holiday

Liam

I always pack my large suitcase on the evening before a holiday. Usually, nobody helps me because I know exactly what I need. I never put snacks in my bag, as I prefer to buy sandwiches at the airport. I love taking pictures, so I always remember to bring my new camera. I also pack heavy walking boots, but I don't need any warm clothes for the beach.

Harley

I hate carrying large luggage, so I only take a small backpack on holiday. Two days before the trip, my older sister always checks it to make sure I have everything. I always pack a warm coat because planes can be quite cold. I don't have a camera, but I bring my tablet to watch funny films on the journey. Before we leave, I put some chocolate inside to eat later.

Josh

I prefer to put things in my sports bag on the morning of the trip. My dad always helps me, which is great because I often forget things! I pack lots of light T-shirts, and I bring some sweet apples if I get hungry. I don't like watching films, but I pack a small video game to play. I usually wear my comfortable trainers to the airport.

Isla's blog

One day my mum said, "Why don't we make a garden behind our flats?" There was an empty place there. Mum said there was a garden there when she was a girl, and she remembers it very well. Everyone in the street loved it! I could not believe that nobody made another garden after that. If it was so good, why not make a new one?

We started to plan it with some of our neighbours. I made a poster and a website, so everyone in the street knew about the garden and could send their old photos. There were pictures of my mum as a girl, with friends who do not live here now. I was happy to see that the big tree in the photos is still there!

My dad liked the idea, but he was a little afraid. "Many people here do not know each other," he said. "What if nobody wants to help us?" I just said, "Don't worry, Dad. They will come."

On Saturday, many people came to help with the flowers and vegetables. It was great! My friends and I really liked sitting with an old man called Mr Brown. He is 87, and he told us a story about the garden when he and his friends were young. Now I always say hello to him when I see him in the street.

Why was Isla surprised?

  • There was not another garden for years.
  • Her mum remembered the old garden so well.
  • Everyone in the street loved the old garden.

The photos show _____.

  • the flats that looked very different
  • her mum’s friends that still live on the street
  • a big tree that is still there

Isla’s dad was afraid that _____.

  • the garden would cost too much money
  • few people would come to help
  • nobody would hear about the garden

Isla and her friends liked _____.

  • meeting Mr Brown’s friends
  • telling Mr Brown about school
  • hearing Mr Brown’s story

What is the best title for the article?

  • Making a garden for our street
  • My mum’s old garden photos
  • A new friend on our street

Hi Liam,

I am trying (0) to start a new cycling group at our school. Are you excited joining it? We can go on long ride every Sunday morning to get some exercise. I already asked a friends from my class to come.

My dad says he will ride with us, but only the weather is nice and sunny. We will probably cycle in the park or near the river.
