Getting a Puppy

Ben always wanted a dog. One day, he asked his mom, "Can we get a puppy?"

His mom smiled and said, "If you can look after yourself and help others, then perhaps yes."

"I can do it! I can also look after a dog well!" Ben said.

For the next two weeks, Ben worked very hard. He got up early every morning, did all his homework, and cleaned the house. He cut the grass in the garden and also helped his little sister with her toys.

His mom smiled but said, "I'm not sure if you're ready yet."

Then Ben came to his grandfather's farm for a week. Ben helped look after the animals every day. He prepared food for the chickens and cows, and cleaned the rabbit cages. Ben was tired, but he learned many new things and did everything well.

The next week was Ben's birthday. His mom took him to a special place for dogs and cats without homes.

"We can help one of them have a home," his mom said with a big smile.

Ben saw many dogs. Then he saw a brown dog with big ears which was sitting quietly in the corner.

"That one came here last year," said a worker. "He's really a good boy."

Ben knew this was his dog. He called him "Buddy," and they became best friends.
