Being a singer

The New Student

On Monday morning, a new student, Harry, arrived at River Street Primary School. He came from another country and didn't speak English very well. At lunchtime, he walked into the busy school cafeteria. The smell of soup and pizza was in the air. Harry looked around, but no-one spoke to him, so he sat alone at a small table.

Emma saw him. She was friendly and went to sit beside him. "Hi, I'm Emma," she said with a smile. She pointed to her sandwich and said, "This is my lunch." Harry smiled back and said, "Harry." They ate together quietly, and both felt a little happy. Emma knew that Harry's English was not good, so she wanted to help.

The next day, Emma brought a small picture dictionary. She showed Harry words for food, classroom things, and games. They practiced together and laughed when they made funny sounds. At lunch, two other students, Ben and Peter, came to sit with them. They all ate together and used simple words to talk.

On Wednesday, Emma asked the teacher, "Can Harry teach the class to say 'hello' in his language, Ms. White?" She agreed. Harry stood at the front and said the word clearly. Everyone repeated it, and he wrote it on the board. The class clapped, and Harry felt happy.

On Friday, Harry played volleyball with his new friends at break time. His English got better every day, and he felt happy at his new school. After the game, he gave Emma some cookies from his country to thank her. "You are a good friend," he said with a big smile.

Hi Sarah,

I just got back from London! I took the train from the station near my house. The platform was huge and full of people. The railway journey 21.1 two hours. When I arrived at London station, I took a taxi to my hotel. 21.2 traffic was terrible! There were so 21.3 cars and buses everywhere, and we moved very slowly. I had to be in the taxi 21.4 an hour.
