Holly's Tortoise

Holly had a small pet tortoise. It was called Dan. She loved it very much. Every morning she fed it and washed the cage twice a week. She enjoyed watching it move slowly. Sometimes she put it on the floor and touched its shell with her finger. Then Dan hid its head and legs under the shell.

One day, Holly came home after school. "Dan, I'm home!" she called out. But when she looked at the cage, Dan wasn't there! Holly quickly ran down to the kitchen.

"Mom, have you seen Dan? It's not in the cage," Holly said in a worried voice.

"No, I haven't," said Mom. "But Mrs. Williams visited this morning with her grandson. I showed him your tortoise." Mom called Mrs. Williams and asked about Dan, but nobody saw it. Holly felt very sad and went to her room quietly. Mom said she would buy a new tortoise, but Holly only wanted Dan.

That evening, Holly didn't talk during dinner. When she was going to bed, her mom suddenly shouted from the bathroom. "Holly, I found Dan!" Holly jumped up and ran to the bathroom. Dan was hiding under the bathroom rug!

Holly took Dan to the cage and gave the tortoise some vegetables. "Please don't let anyone play with Dan again, Mom," said Holly.

"I'm sorry, dear. I won't," Mom answered.
