A friendly new home

Oliver's family moved to some large flats in the city last month. At first, Oliver felt very sad and bored. He missed his old home and his best friends. In the new building, the other families were always busy. They only said a quick 'hello' in the lift and never stopped to talk to each other. Oliver thought the place was very unfriendly.

One evening, his dad had a brilliant idea. 'Why don't we have a special party in the hall?' he asked. 'We can invite everyone, and each family can bring their favourite food to share.' Oliver helped his dad write invitations and put them under everyone's doors. But Oliver was worried. 'What if nobody comes?' he asked his parents. 'People here don't know each other.' His mum smiled and said, 'Let's wait and see.'

On Saturday afternoon, Oliver was very surprised. The long hall outside their flat was full of happy people and lots of delicious food! Everyone was chatting and laughing together. A kind old woman, who lived at the end of the hall, brought an amazing chocolate cake. Oliver tasted a big piece. 'This is fantastic!' he told her. 'It tastes just like my grandmother's cake.'

The woman laughed and sat down to eat with him. They talked for a long time. After the wonderful party, Oliver didn't feel sad anymore. He finally felt very happy in his new home.
