HANOI – Vietnam is strengthening its role in Asian-Pacific trade through its membership in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), which started for the country on January 1, 2022.

The RCEP is known as the world's largest free trade agreement. It includes fifteen countries: all ten ASEAN members plus China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand. Together, these nations make up about thirty percent of the world's economy, population, and trade.

The World Bank predicts Vietnam will gain the most among all RCEP members. Experts expect Vietnam's exports to grow by 11.4 percent between 2020 and 2035. The agreement removes taxes on ninety percent of traded goods over twenty years and creates simpler rules for buying and selling across borders.

Vietnamese businesses, especially small and medium companies that make up ninety-seven percent of all companies in the country, will greatly benefit from lower costs and faster customs procedures. Important industries like clothing, shoes, farm products, and electronics are expected to grow across the region.

Government officials say RCEP membership makes Vietnam more attractive to foreign investors and helps the country join regional business networks more easily. In 2022, Vietnam's exports reached over $730 billion, showing a 9.1 percent increase from the year before. This shows the agreement's immediate positive effect on the economy.
