Miguel, a man in San Diego tried to set up a satellite dish by himself. As he climbed up the ladder, his wife called from inside the house, "Turn it a bit more to the left!"

"How about now?" he shouted back.

"Perfect! The reception is great now," she replied.

The couple settled down in front of the TV for the evening. The next day was extremely hot, so they decided to stay indoors and watch television.

That afternoon, they heard fire-engine sirens and lots of shouting outside. "What’s going on?" Miguel's wife exclaimed.

They rushed outside and saw the house opposite in flames. "The house is on fire!" Miguel shouted.

The fire was eventually put out, but the firemen couldn’t figure out the cause. "Do you have any idea what started it?" one firefighter asked the house's owner.

"No, I have no clue," he shook his head and replied.

The next day, a fire inspector examined the burnt remains. He seemed stuck. Suddenly, a flash of sunlight caught his eye. He looked towards Miguel's house. "Wait a minute," he said. "The sunlight and the satellite dish?"

After that, he decided to conduct an experiment. He set up a similar dish and positioned it as Miguel had. Within minutes, the focused sunlight caused a piece of fabric to smoke and then catch fire. "This is it," the inspector declared. "The satellite dish caused the fire by focusing the sun’s rays."

Miguel was fined $2,000 and ordered to take down his satellite dish. He said, "Well, I guess it's time to get cable."

  • To make the neighbour admit his fault
  • To provide the evidence to the police
  • To confirm his theory of the fire

What might Miguel do in the near future?

  • Hire professional installation
  • Switch to cable television
  • Use his satellite dish with more caution
