Hi Peter,

I’m writing to tell you about my favorite school subjects. My favorite subject is Math. It’s so interesting, but also pretty challenging. I also really enjoy Computer Science because I want to be a software developer, just like my older brother. He’s currently working on designing video games and educational programs for teenagers. He’s really smart!

Oh, I almost forgot to share one of my secrets with you — I spend a lot of my free time drawing, so I love Art as well. My art teacher is kind of strict, but she’s also funny. Do you think someone who works with computers can also be a painter? If so, I’d love to do both! How about you? Write back and tell me about your favorite school subjects.

Love,
David

Why does David write this letter?

  • To talk about his teachers and classes
  • To talk about his dream job in the future
  • To talk about the subjects he like best

  • Filling: pork, scallions, ginger, Sichuan pepper, soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, salt, celery, and coriander
  • Sauce: ginger, soy sauce, vinegar, sugar and coriander

Steps to make dumplings:

  1. Prepare purpose flour and water to make the dough. A ratio of about two cups of flour and half a cup of water should do the trick.
  2. Cover the dough and let it rest for 10 minutes once it's formed. After kneading it smooth, rest for 30 minutes, then roll into a rope, cut into 7-8 pieces, and press each into a small circle.
  3. Mix pork with scallions, ginger, Sichuan pepper, soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, and salt. After salting and resting the celery, add it to the pork with coriander and mix.
  4. Place a tablespoon of filling in the center of a dumpling wrapper. Fold and pinch the edges to seal tightly.
  5. Line a steamer with baking paper and arrange dumplings. Boil water in a wok, place the steamer above, and steam for 15-20 minutes until cooked.
  6. Combine ginger, soy sauce, vinegar, sugar and coriander in a bowl. Stir until well combined. Serve with dumplings.

Marco wanted to have a pool party for his birthday. He made a list of friends to invite, and his mom suggested six friends so she could watch them safely in the pool. Marco made six invitations at home and gave them to his friends at school. Max, Sam, Kai, Liam, and Felix were excited and told Marco they would come. Marco gave the last invitation to Aidan, who seemed happy but hesitated. Marco could tell something was bothering Aidan.

That evening, Marco’s mom got a call from Aidan’s mom. After the call, she explained to Marco, "Aidan really wants to come to your party. He thinks you’re a good friend."

"So, what’s the problem?" Marco asked.

"Aidan isn’t a great swimmer," his mom said. "He’s nervous about swimming and afraid the other boys might tease him if they see him scared in the water." Marco understood why Aidan had acted strangely.

"Mom, I’d never tease Aidan, especially if he comes to my party," Marco replied. Marco and his mom then decided on a solution. The kids would swim only in the shallow end of the pool, so Aidan wouldn’t feel uncomfortable. With this plan, Aidan could come to the party and have fun without feeling nervous. The solution worked, and Marco’s party was a success.

Why did Marco's mom suggest inviting only six friends?

  • To ensure the kids were safe
  • To prepare enough food
  • To keep the party small and quiet

What did Aidan feel about the party when he got the invitation?

  • He didn’t want to go because he was busy.
  • He was excited about swimming in the pool.
  • He was happy but nervous about swimming.

What did Marco and his mom decide to do to help Aiden?

  • The swimming activity would be canceled.
  • The kids would swim in the shallow end of the pool.
  • The party would be organized inside the house.

The Ling family didn't plan on getting a pet that day. Annie wanted to visit the animal shelter to see the cats and dogs. She had been wanting a pet for years, but her parents were waiting until she and her sister, Lily, were old enough. Annie was seven, and Lily was only three, still learning how to behave around animals.

Annie and Lily were excited to see the animals. A shelter volunteer gave the family a tour and explained why some animals were there - some were found by the road, and others were given up by families who couldn't care for them. When they reached the animals, Annie was sad to see some looking scared. The volunteer reassured her that it took time for animals to adjust to the new environment and that the staff were kind and caring.

The family started talking as they walked through the dog section. Annie's mom was drawn to an older black dog, while her dad liked a large, energetic one. But Annie had found her favorite - a young, spotted brown puppy found near the railroad track. She thought he had the cutest face.

Although her parents hesitated, they saw how much Annie adored the puppy. The volunteer assured them the dog would be great with children. That was all they needed to hear. They decided to bring the puppy home!

Why did the Ling family visit the animal shelter?

  • To adopt a dog that day
  • To take a tour and see the animals
  • To donate food to the animals there

Why did some of the animals look scared?

  • The staff didn’t take care of them properly.
  • They were not used to the new place yet.
  • They were sick and needed treatment.

Why did Annie's parents decide to adopt the puppy?

  • Because they trusted the volunteer's advice about it.
  • Because they believed it would require a little care.
  • Because they thought it would be Lily's best friend.

What might be the best title for the story?

  • A Visit to the Animal Shelter
  • Lily's Favorite Animal
  • How to Adopt a Dog at Shelter

A View from the Clouds

Written by Elizabeth Baker with Laura Kachelmeyer

Have you ever looked out your window and seen clouds all around? You were probably in an airplane! Airplanes are huge, so how do they stay in the air? Airplanes fly because of a force called lift. Lift happens when the engines start. The powerful engines push the plane forward, and the wheels help it move faster. As the engines push the wings, air moves over and under them. The air below the wings is strong enough to lift the plane. The wings are curved on top and flat on the bottom, creating pressure that pushes the plane up.

When flying, you may see mountains, oceans, or just clouds, depending on your altitude. Thousands of years ago, people dreamed of flying. In Ancient Greece and China, people tried to create ways to fly. Modern airplanes weren’t invented until the early 1900s, thanks to engineers like the Wright brothers. Today, over 100,000 planes fly every day, carrying people worldwide.

Why do airplane wings have different shapes on the top and bottom?

  • To ensure the plane doesn't fall when flying
  • To waste less metal in the construction of planes
  • To create pressure to force the plane upward

What does the passage suggest about the development of aircraft in history?

  • People still use types of aircrafts that were invented in ancient times.
  • The first airplanes were invented by the Wright brothers.
  • The 1900s saw the development of the first modern aircrafts after years.

What is the passage about?

  • Different shapes and sizes of clouds
  • Airplanes and their development
  • What we can see from an airplane

Louis Braille

At just 12 years old, Louis Braille, a young French boy, invented a new reading system for the blind. This system, called Braille, used raised dots in various combinations to form words, allowing blind people to read. Louis was born near Paris on January 4, 1809. At three, he accidentally injured his eye with an awl, a tool for making holes. The injury led to an infection that spread to his other eye, causing him to lose his sight in both eyes. Despite the challenges, Louis adapted and continued learning at a special school for the blind. While at school, Louis began developing an alphabet inspired by an old military code. Using a dull awl, he created letters made of six raised dots. This system made reading easier and faster for the blind. Ironically, the tool that caused his blindness helped him invent something remarkable for others.

According to the passage, what is NOT true?

  • Louis created a six-dot alphabet using an awl.
  • Louis decided to leave school after the accident.
  • Thanks to the Braille system, blind people can read again.

What does the passage suggest about Louis Braille?

  • He became rich with the Braille system.
  • He lost sight in both eyes in 1812.
  • He helped blind people to get jobs.

What did Louis Braille use to create the alphabet?

  • Telecommunications codes
  • An old military code
  • Sign language
