Melissa smiled and said, "If you want, we could go together this weekend." Sandra smiled and hugged her.

Just then, Melissa’s friend Beth walked over. "Melissa, you’re so lucky! I can’t wait to go to the movies with you," Beth said. Melissa suddenly remembered her promise to Beth to share the tickets if one of them won. Sandra’s face fell, and she looked disappointed. Melissa turned to Beth and said, "I’m so sorry. I forgot about our plan and already invited Sandra."

After a pause, Beth suggested, "Why don’t we all go together?" Sandra hesitated, saying she didn’t have enough money. Melissa quickly suggested buying the third ticket as a gift for Sandra. Sandra’s eyes lit up, and the three friends happily went to the movies together.

Dylan was sure he would hate his new school in Seattle. He didn’t know anyone and he was certain school would be awful. On his first day, he forced himself onto the bus, found a seat alone, and stared out the window. He thought it would be a terrible day.

"Do you mind if I sit here?" asked a boy around his age. "Whatever," Dylan muttered. "What’s your name?" the boy asked. "I’m Dylan," he replied after a pause. "What’s yours?" "Brad," the boy said with a smile. "Are you new?" "Yeah, we just moved to Seattle." Unsure of what else to say, Dylan asked, "Do you play sports or anything?" "Not much," Brad replied, "except for skateboarding." "You skateboard?" Dylan asked, surprised and excited. "Yeah, I love it. Do you?" Brad replied. "Whenever I can. There’s a skate park near my house," Dylan said. Almost reluctantly, he added, "Maybe we could skate sometime." "Yeah, that’d be great," Brad agreed with a grin.

As the bus arrived at school, Dylan hesitated because he was unsure of where to go. Brad noticed and offered, "I’m heading to the office if you want to come along." Gratefully, Dylan followed and realized that maybe this school wouldn’t be so bad after all.

Why was Dylan sure his new school would be awful?

The Panda Bear

The panda bear is one of the most unusual bears. It lives in the misty bamboo forests of southwestern China. There are two main types: the giant black-and-white panda and the red panda. Giant pandas can weigh 175 to 275 pounds and can be five to six feet tall. A newborn panda is tiny, about the size of a chipmunk. It is born blind and depends fully on its mother. Pandas spend 12 hours a day eating bamboo. They use special wrist bones to hold bamboo stalks and eat the soft inside. Bamboo is their main food, but they may also eat mushrooms, insects, grasses, fish, fruit, and rice. Pandas do not hibernate. They stay active all year due to their mild climate.

What type of climate allows pandas to stay active all year?

  • Hot and dry
  • Mild and foggy
  • Cold and snowy

Most schools do not allow cell phones, and not all students agree with this rule. There are two sides to the issue that cause different opinions.

Some people believe phones are important, especially for safety. Many parents give their children phones to stay in contact in emergencies. They think students can keep the phone on silent so it does not disturb anyone.

On the other side, some people believe cell phones should not be allowed in schools at all. They feel parents don’t need to reach their children directly during school hours and can call the school if needed. Cell phones might also cause cheating since students could send answers to each other during tests.

What is the main idea of the passage?

  • Whether or not cell phones should be allowed at school
  • What makes cell phones appropriate for use in schools
  • How cell phones disturb the learning at school

Why do some parents approve of students using cell phones at school?

  • Because their children can quickly call for help in an emergency.
  • Because their children promise to keep the cell phone on vibrate in class.
  • Because they want to control their children's behavior at school.

What is NOT mentioned as a reason to ban cell phones at school?

  • Parents can contact their children through the school if necessary.
  • Students can get distracted by phones during lessons.
  • Students cheat more easily with cell phones.
