Hello there! I began working at Winterton Junior School in January 2010 as the new headteacher and am surrounded by lots of lovely children, staff, governors, and parents. As you can imagine, I am very proud of our school and everyone associated with it, and I love coming to work! I especially like it when I walk around the school and see what everyone is getting up to and also when children bring their work to celebrate with me.

I enjoy mathematics (especially problem-solving) and literature (because I enjoy reading, writing and drama), and I also have an interest in history and art.

In my spare time, I read a great deal, spend time in the kitchen baking, making pickles and jams with produce from the garden, and entertain my family and friends. (I enjoy eating delicious food, too, especially when someone else has cooked it!) I also enjoy traveling both in Britain and abroad appreciate music and art, and love shopping!

First of all, wearing uniforms will stop kids in gangs from wearing their gang colors. It'll help kids who can't afford all the brand-name clothing, like me. I am often made fun of for not having this kind of shirt or these kinds of pants. Many other kids are like me, I know. In my city, all the Catholic high school students wear uniforms. For boys: black pants and a white shirt with the school logo. For girls: a black skirt and a white shirt with the school logo. I don't find anything wrong with the uniform. I heard nothing about fighting about wearing uniforms or anything like that. I think that uniforms make everyone feel the same, not totally the same, but the same as in "Oh, her clothes are so ugly" and other comments.

A straight-A student got a C in her cooking class and she did not like this. She did not like it so much that her dad filed a complaint in federal court about it. He alleged that the teacher, who is white, discriminated against his daughter, who is black. He was seeking to have her grade changed from the C to an A and asks for unspecified financial damages.

Virginia Brown is in the ninth grade at Ashley High School. Since her first year in school, she has had perfect attendance and all her grades have been A's. Virginia's father said her heart was broken when she got the C.

"She cried the whole weekend," he said. "She wouldn't come out of her room. Her eyes were red and puffy. My little girl hasn't been this upset since her cat got run over by a car when she was 6 years old."

Virginia is a model student. She's the class president. She's on the swim team, the volleyball team, and the track team. She belongs to the chess club. She is a member of the Girl Scouts and sings in her church choir.

The home economics teacher is 28-year-old Jessica Smith. This is her first year teaching. Ms. Smith said that discrimination was absolutely not the issue. "Some of my best friends are African-Americans," she said. "This isn't a black-and-white problem. Everybody in America wants to sue everybody else. I will sue them for defamation of character and whatever else my lawyer comes up with."

The school principal, who grew up in India, said he supported Ms. Smith 100 percent. He said that Virginia is an excellent student, who would have no problem getting into the best universities even with a C in cooking. "She won't have any difficulty finding a great university, but she might have problems finding a husband," he laughed, "She'd better look for a man who likes to eat out a lot."

On Saturday evening, CCTV showed a computer-generated image of the Chang'e 3 lander's path as it approached the surface of the moon, saying that during the landing period, it needed to have no contact with the Earth. As it was just hundreds of meters (yards) away, the lander's camera broadcast images of the moon's surface.

The Chang'e 3's solar panels, which are used to absorb sunlight to generate power, opened soon after the landing.

The mission blasted off from southwest China on December 2nd on a Long March-3B carrier rocket. It is named after a mythical Chinese goddess of the moon, and its rover is named "Yutu", or "Jade Rabbit" in English, which is the goddess's pet.

China's military-backed space program has made methodical progress in a relatively short time, although it lags far behind the United States and Russia in technology and experience.

China sent its first astronaut into space in 2003, becoming the third nation after Russia and the United States to achieve manned space travel independently. In 2006, it sent its first probe to the moon. China plans to open a space station around 2020 and send an astronaut to the moon after that.

"They are taking their time with getting to know about how to fly humans into space, how to build space stations ... how to explore the solar system, especially the moon and Mars. They are making good strides, and I think over the next 10-20 years they'll certainly be rivaling Russia and America in this area and maybe overtaking them in some areas," said Peter Bond, consultant editor for Jane's Space Systems and Industry.

(Adapted from Toefl Junior Practice 10 Test)

What is this passage mainly about?
  • An unknown flying object was found out by China.
  • China is making strides in the space race.
  • China's intention of taking over space
  • The way Chang'e 3 will be sent into space
Why does Chang'e 3 lander have its own path?
  • To show China's capability of computer technology
  • To avoid unnecessary problem when it's landing
  • To show the surface of the moon more clearly
  • To save its energy that might be used for taking pictures

The word "absorb" in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to _____.

  • take in
  • emit
  • get rid of
  • attract
What is "Jade Rabbit"?
  • A Chinese astronaut's pet
  • The name of the rover of Chang'e 3
  • A goddess in China's myth
  • The name of the carrier rocket
What can be inferred about China's space program?
  • It operates independently of any government or military support.
  • It has always been very successful and supported military's purposes.
  • It is relatively immature compared to those of some other developed countries.
  • It is the oldest space program with extensive experience in space exploration.

The word "it" in the fifth paragraph refers to _____.

  • China
  • Russia
  • the United States
  • a space station
When does China plan to send a human to the moon?
  • In 2003
  • In 2006
  • In late 2020
  • After 2020

Why does the author quote Bond's words in the last paragraph?

  • To show that China will succeed in the field of space exploration
  • To argue whether China is going to benefit from its space program
  • To discuss other countries' progress in space exploration
  • To tell readers more about why we should explore space

The word "rivaling" in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to _____.

  • matching
  • confronting

Read the article and answer the following questions.

Of the six outer planets, Mars, commonly called the Red Planet, is the closest to the Earth. Mars, 4,200 miles in diameter and 55 percent of the size of the Earth, is 34,600,000 miles from the Earth, and 141,000,000 miles from the Sun. It takes this planet, along with its two moons, Phobos and Deimo, 1.88 years to circle the Sun, compared to days for the Earth.

For many years, Mars had been thought of as the planet with man-made canals, supposedly discovered by an Italian astronomer, Schiaparelli, in 1877. With the United States spacecraft Viking I’s landing on Mars in 1976, the man-made canal theory was proven to be only a myth.

Viking I, after landing on the soil of Mars, performed many scientific experiments and took numerous pictures. The pictures showed that the red color of the planet is due to the reddish, rocky Martian soil. No biological life was found, though it had been speculated by many scientists. The Viking also monitored many weather changes including violent dust storms. Some water vapor, polar ice, and permafrost (frost below the surface) were found, indicating that at one time there were significant quantities of water on this distant planet. Evidence collected by the spacecraft shows some present volcanic action, though the volcanoes are believed to be dormant, if not extinct.

Which of the following is true about Mars?

  • Mars has two moons.
  • Mars is larger than the Earth.
  • It takes Mars over 2 years to orbit the Sun.
  • Mars is closer to the Sun than the Earth.

The word “supposedly” in the second paragraph is closest in meaning to _____.

  • actually
  • presumably
  • formerly
  • unquestionably

What did the Viking I landing on Mars in 1976 prove?

  • The actual size of Mars was unexpected.
  • The 1877 exploration left questions unanswered.
  • The idea of man-made canals on Mars was false.
  • A landing on Mars’s surface was not achievable.

The Viking I exploration accomplished all of the following EXCEPT _____.

  • performing scientific experiments
  • collecting information showing volcanic action
  • monitoring weather conditions
  • discovering large quantities of polar ice and permafrost

The word “it” in the third paragraph refers to _____.

  • biological life
  • Martian soil
  • red color
  • weather

The word “dormant” in the third paragraph is closest in meaning to ________.

  • dangerous
  • inactive
  • underground
  • significant

What is the main idea of this article?

  • Recent studies of this planet reveal data that contradict previously held theories.
  • Very little of the Martian landscape has changed over the years.
  • Scientists are only speculating about the Red Planet.
  • Scientists are no longer interested in the planet because there is no life on it.

The Amish are part of a Protestant religious group that began in Switzerland and Germany in the 1500s. This group formed after Martin Luther separated from the Roman Catholic Church, which led to the Protestant Reformation. This movement spread across northern Germany and Scandinavia and focused on personal faith and the authority of the Bible.

Some people wanted more change and developed new forms of worship. One point of contention of the reform movement was baptism. Many believed that baptism should only be done for adults who had accepted the teachings of Jesus Christ. This belief was a key part of the Radical Reformation movement. These reformers were called Anabaptists, meaning "Rebaptizers," because they had already been baptized as babies in the Catholic Church. They also believed that the church and government should be separate.

These Swiss Anabaptists later became known as Mennonites, named after a former Catholic priest, Menno Simons, who led them in the Netherlands and northern Germany in the 1530s. The Mennonites were seen as heretics and were punished with torture, burning, jail, drowning, and other forms of harassment during the 1600s. During this time, a stricter group of Mennonites, led by Jacob Ammann, split off and became known as the Amish.
