My dear father,

I was glad to receive your affectionate letter today. As you asked me about my hostel life, I am penning down a brief description of it.

The hostel life here is entirely different from the village life, so I have enjoyed it so far. Vidya Bharati Hostel (my hostel) is a very good hostel. There are fifty-three rooms and two halls inside the hostel premises. I share the room with two other students. All the hostel inmates live like brothers. We get milk, bread and biscuits at 7:30 a.m., the breakfast time. We are served lunch at 12:30 p.m. The food served here is fresh and tasty. There is a library in the hostel and a TV room also. We play games in the evening.

The hostel authorities take us out for picnics every month. We have been to the Mahakal temple, Bhartrihari caves, Kshipra river banks, etc.

Mr. P. K. Sharma is the warden of the hostel. He takes care of all our problems. He is very kind and cooperative. I am happy here and enjoying my hostel life.

Please convey my regards to mother and love to Sumi.

Your loving son,

Narendra

Dear Sitaram,

I was glad to receive your letter. It was a pleasure to know that you are enjoying the winter vacations at your Mamaji's place in Lucknow.

You have asked about the annual function held in my school. Well, the annual function of my school was held on 2nd January, Tuesday. A stage was built up. Three big "Shamianas" were fixed. Our education minister was the chief guest of the day. A cultural show was arranged, in which one-act plays, folk dances, and songs were presented. After the cultural show, the principal read the annual report. The chief guest distributed prizes to the meritorious students and the best performers. He praised the efforts made by our school in preparing the students for the annual function. The function ended after a tea party. It was a properly arranged and well-managed function.

In the town of Lampang in northern Thailand, there is an unusual group of musicians. They play many different kinds of music - everything from traditional Thai songs to music by Beethoven. Both children and adults love this group. What makes them so popular? Is it their music? Their looks? Yes, it's both, but it's also something else: they're elephants.

These musical elephants started at the Thai Elephant Conservation Center (TECC) in Lampang. The TECC protects elephants. It teaches people to understand and care for these huge, but gentle, animals. Like many zoos around the world, the TECC encourages elephants to paint.

Richard Lair works with the TECC. He knows a lot about elephants. He says some paintings of these animals are very good. In fact, elephants hear better than see. Lair, hence, had an idea: if elephants are intelligent and have good hearing, maybe they can play music. To test his idea, Lair and a friend started the Thai Elephant Orchestra. During a performance, the elephants play a variety of instruments, including the drums and the xylophone. The animals also use their voices and trunks to make sounds.

Can elephants really make music properly? "Yes", says Lair. They're very creative. Humans encourage the animals to play, but the elephants make their own songs; they do not just copy their trainers or other people. There are now CDs of the group and the music these artists create is pretty amazing, which earns money for the TECC.

Although many people are getting reconnected on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, many more are still hesitant to attend their 30- or 50-year high school reunion. This article will examine high school reunions through my personal experiences.

From 1958 until 1962, I attended a small high school in a rural area of Wisconsin. Looking back on those years, high school was not the most enjoyable time of my life. Even though I was on the varsity football team, an honor student, and active in drama and speech clubs, my classmates regarded me as a poorly dressed, socially inept nerd. Throughout high school, I never had a girlfriend or attended school dances. Living on a farm, I had to help with the milking both early in the morning and early in the evening every day. I had no time or means of transport to go into town or opportunities to socialize with them. My only motivation at high school was to be the number one student in class and get into college.

John F. Kennedy was the youngest man who has ever been elected president of the United States. His term ended after two years and ten months when he was shot to death in Dallas, Texas. Kennedy came from an Irish family that left Ireland during the 1840s. In America, the Kennedy's became rich, and JFK's father was a politician and millionaire.

After John had studied politics at Harvard University, he joined the US Navy and was commander of a boat during World War II. He became a war hero and was honored because he rescued the crew of his boat when it was bombed by Japanese airplanes.

In the 1940s, Kennedy's political career began. He became a member of the House of Representatives and later a senator in his home state of Massachusetts. In 1960, Kennedy won the race for the White House and became the first Roman Catholic president of the USA. People liked him because he was good-looking and rich. He was a young, dynamic American, and he had an attractive wife, Jacqueline.

Kennedy had many things to do during his short presidency. He helped African Americans in their fight for equal rights. JFK promised to put a man on the moon before the Soviets. His main problem, however, was Cuba. In 1961, the Soviet Union put missiles, which could attack the US, on the island. When Kennedy threatened to start a war, the Russians removed their missiles.

On November 22, 1963, JFK's presidency ended when he rode in his open car through the streets of Dallas, Texas. Bullets hit him in the back of the head. He was rushed to hospital, but doctors couldn't save his life. Shortly afterwards he died and Vice President Lyndon Johnson became president. A few hours after the murder, Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested because he was in the building from which the shots came. The police were sure that Oswald was the murderer. A few days later, Oswald himself was killed.

The assassination is still a mystery today. First, it was thought that Oswald acted alone, but today many people think that there were more people involved in Kennedy's murder.

Owls are fascinating nocturnal birds of prey that inhabit nearly every continent on Earth, with the sole exception of Antarctica. There are approximately 250 recognized species of owls, which are generally classified into two main families: the true owls and the barn owls. However, scientists do not always agree on how certain species should be categorized. For instance, there is ongoing debate about whether small owls such as the scops owl should be considered part of the true owl family or belong to a different group entirely. These classifications are often based on subtle differences in size, feather structure, and the distinctive calls that each species produces to communicate or defend its territory.

Contrary to the common belief that all owls live in dark, dense forests, these adaptable birds can be found in a surprising variety of habitats. While many species indeed make their homes among trees, others prefer wide-open environments such as grasslands, deserts, or even bustling urban areas. The snowy owl, for example, thrives in the frozen Arctic tundra, where it hunts lemmings and other small mammals. On the other hand, the burrowing owl lives in dry, open plains, often nesting in holes abandoned by other animals. This remarkable adaptability has allowed owls to survive in almost every type of climate on the planet.

The physical characteristics of owls vary dramatically between species. The elf owl, which is the smallest of them all, measures barely 13 centimeters in height and weighs less than 50 grams—roughly the same as a golf ball. In contrast, the majestic great grey owl can grow to 70 centimeters in length and has a wingspan exceeding 150 centimeters. In general, larger owl species tend to inhabit colder regions, whereas smaller ones are commonly found in warmer climates. Fossil evidence suggests that millions of years ago, prehistoric owls were even larger than eagles and occupied a wide range of ecosystems.

Owls are highly efficient hunters, primarily active at night. Their diet mainly consists of insects, small mammals, and occasionally other birds. Thanks to their specialized feathers, they can fly almost silently, giving them the advantage of surprising their prey. Unlike many bird species, owls are not particularly fearful of humans and often live near villages or cities with minimal disturbance. Nevertheless, their survival is increasingly threatened by deforestation, pollution, and the destruction of natural habitats.

What would be the best title for the passage?
  • Owls
  • Owls and People
  • Types of Birds of Prey
  • Life in the Night Sky

In the first paragraph, what does the author mean by stating that "However, scientists do not always agree on how certain species should be categorized"?

  • The two-family system for classifying owls is likely incorrect.
  • Barn owls and true owls will soon be combined into one family.
  • The scientific classification of owls is not completely settled.
  • Scientists have recently discovered many new owl species.

What can we know from the second paragraph?

  • Owls no longer inhabit forest environments.
  • Owls are now living in every part of the world.
  • Owls are not confined to forests.
  • Most scientists believe owls live in deserts.

In the third paragraph, the word “ones” refers to _____.

  • larger owls
  • climates
  • smaller owls
  • regions

Why does the author mention the "elf owl" and the "great grey owl" in the third paragraph?

  • To illustrate the significant range of sizes among owl species.
  • To suggest that smaller owls are more numerous than larger owls.
  • To explain the relationship between an owl's size and its habitat.
  • To introduce the two most dangerous types of owls.
In the third paragraph, the word “prehistoric” is closest in meaning to _____.
  • rare
  • ancient
  • endangered
  • unknown
What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
  • The snowy owl’s characteristics.
  • Different hunting habits among owl species.
  • The variation in size and habitat among owl species.
  • Where to find the smallest owls.

In the fourth paragraph, the word “advantage” is closest in meaning to _____.

  • edge
  • asset
  • bonus
  • appeal

  • They are forced to live near cities due to habitat loss.
  • They are safe from natural predators in human cities.
  • They are able to tolerate human presence.
  • They are considered a nuisance in urban areas.
