LIFE DURING THE PANDEMIC
By: Lynda Feustel (adapted)
1. Entering year two of (1) _____ pandemic is strange. It barely seems a day since last March 2020, but it also seems like a lifetime. As an only child and introvert, shutting down my world was initially simple and relatively easy. My friends and I had been super busy with the school play, and while I was sad about it being canceled, I was struggling a lot during that show and desperately needed some time (2) _____.
2. As March turned to April, virtual school began, and being alone really set in. I missed my friends and us being together. The isolation felt real with just my parents and me, even as we spent time together. My friends and I began meeting on Facetime every night (3) _____ TV and just be together in some way. We laughed at insane jokes we made, had homework and therapy sessions over Facetime, and grew closer through digital and literal walls. The summer passed with in-person events together, and the virus faded into the background for a little while. We went to the beach and (4) _____ out in people's backyards.
3. Then school came for us in a way none of us had ever expected. In hybrid school, we were separated. Students had lessons, sports, and other activities while many of us were in quarantine. Teachers piled on work, and the virus grew more present again. Group texting put out hundreds of messages a day and again, meeting in person as a group (5) _____. Being together on video and in person was the way of staying cheered up.
4. We are working and looking for some change as we are about to enter the second year of this pandemic. After all, life is hopeful.

Read the passage and choose the best answer for each question below.
By: Lieutenant Brian Ellis (adapted)
1. One of the promises I have made to myself as a leader in recent years is to be more mindful of improving my surroundings every day. This happens mostly through the lessons of life, and pushing into areas that challenge my way of thinking or creating useful opportunities for me to strengthen my values. Any good gift is worth sharing, so I extend the list of books with some following sweet faces of love.
2. Love is patient: The opposite is impatience, a cause of hostility and frustration. According to Challenging the Law Enforcement Organization by Jack Enter, leaders have to make sure they are patient enough for others to go through the processes of learning from mistakes.
3. Love is kind: No employee will follow a controlling leader. Good leaders make people-centered policies because of the benefits and force these policies create. In A Higher Standard of Leadership by Keshavan Nair, it is suggested to look below the surface and identify the hidden needs of others to create a bond with those you are trying to serve.
4. Love does not envy: Envy can be subtle and indirect, and interferes with colleagues, family, and friends, according to Envy and Leadership by Mark Stein. Being truthful to yourself means understanding who you are and who you want to be. Being comfortable with the journey is part of the experience. Having more doesn't fix anything, and the idea of being content is the way to a satisfied heart.
5. Love keeps no record of wrongs: I'm no saint and neither are you. Be compassionate enough for problem-solving, which also means you understand when it's time to turn around and reassess. Create an environment that is focused on problem-solving rather than people blaming through learning and development.
6. Love always trusts: Trust is challenging at times, and it requires us to confront the things that stand in its way. When we have to protect ourselves from each other, the whole organization suffers. When trust thrives, the organization grows stronger as a result, as illustrated in Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don't by Simon Sinek.
7. All in all, love never fails. It will be the one constant that gives you an inspired life.

Read the following passage then choose the best answer to each question.
1. SARS, Ebola, and SARS-CoV-2: all three of these highly infectious viruses have caused global panic since 2002, and all three of them jumped to humans from wild animals living in dense tropical forests that we are slashing and burning to create land for crops, mining, and housing. The more we clear, the more we come into contact with wildlife which hosts illnesses likely transferred to humans.
2. Stopping deforestation will not only reduce natural disasters but also control the spread of a long list of dangerous diseases that have come from rain forest habitats - Zika, Nipah, malaria, cholera, HIV, and so on. A 2019 study found that a 10 percent increase in deforestation would raise malaria cases by 3.3 percent; that would be 7.4 million people worldwide. Meanwhile, an average of 28 million hectares of forest have been cut down annually since 2016, and there is no sign of a slowdown. [A]
3. Societies can take numerous steps to prevent the destruction. Eating less meat, which improves our health anyway, will lessen demand for crops and pastures. Eating fewer processed foods will reduce the demand for palm oil, much of which is grown on land from tropical rain forests. Producing more food per hectare can boost supply without the need for more land. [B]
4. In the meantime, governments should prohibit the sale of live wild animals in so-called wet markets, where pathogens have repeatedly crossed over into humans. The markets may be culturally important, but the risk is too great. Governments must also ban illegal wildlife trade, which can spread infectious agents far and wide. In addition, authorities must examine factory farms that pack thousands of animals together - the source of the 2009 swine flu outbreak that killed more than 10,000 people in the U.S. and many more people worldwide. [C]
5. Ending deforestation and preventing pandemics would address six of the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals: the guarantee of healthy lives, zero hunger, gender equality, responsible consumption and production, sustainably managed land, and climate action. The COVID-19 pandemic is a catastrophe, but it calls for our attention on the human achievements by not overexploiting the natural world. [D]
