Read the following passage and choose the best answer for each blank.

East of Lao Cai, Ha Giang is Vietnam's most northern province. Its population is people belonging to various ethnic minority groups such as the Muong, Tay, Lo, and Dao. Ha Giang is well known for its rugged high mountains, which seem to belong in a "Lord of the Rings" film, they feature huge limestone peaks and rocks with deep, narrow cracks. A large protected area known as the Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark has been established there. It is Vietnam's first geopark and the UNESCO-supported Global Geoparks Network. The "karst" in the geopark's name refers to a landscape and features irregular limestone peaks above and numerous caves, sinkholes, and streams underground. its geological value, it is also home to some important fauna and flora, and the scenery is breathtaking. Together with the attractiveness of the ethnic minority groups that live there, this makes it a very tourist destination.

However, the beauty of the province and the interesting cultural traditions of the ethnic minorities should not distract one from remembering that Ha Giang is still an area with low levels of income, education and health. The villages are deep in remote valleys or, sometimes, high up the mountain slopes, in terrain that requires work to produce any crops. In fact, much of the land is hardly suitable for agriculture, by creating terraces on very steep slopes and taking advantage of small patches between the rocks to cultivate their crops. Their perpetual survival is proof of their indomitable spirits.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

“Night mode” is one of those features you may be aware of only because your phone keeps telling you about it. At some point, while you are lying in bed at night sending texts, your screen may politely suggest you activate a function that shifts the colours of your screen from the colder to the warmer end of the spectrum. It is supposed to help you sleep better. Findings in a study led by Dr Tim Brown and published in Current Biology suggest this is the very opposite of correct. The research, carried out on mice, appears to rubbish the notion that blue light disrupts sleep. All things being equal, warm yellow light is worse.

So, where did the idea of limiting blue light from screens originate? “There was definitely a valid scientific idea about why that would work,” says Brown. It started about 20 years ago with the discovery of the role that melanopsin – a light-sensitive protein found in the eye – plays in regulating the body clock.

“The melanopsin system is fundamentally there to detect brightness,” says Brown. Because melanopsin was better at detecting short-wavelength photons, he says, it was thought it was biased in favour of blue light. In fact, it is the retina’s cone cells that determine colour. “The cone system also plays a role, and they’re doing the opposite of what most people thought,” says Brown.

According to the study, brightness levels are more important than colour when it comes to stimulating the body clock. However, when the light is equally dim, blue is more relaxing than yellow.

This makes basic sense: daylight is yellow, twilight is blue, and sunrise and sunset are pretty reliable ways to tell your body clock what time it is. Of course, at this point, we only know it works on mice – and mice don’t have phones. “We think there is good reason to believe it’s also true in humans,” says Dr Brown.

There is perhaps a more obvious truth to be drawn – if your phone is telling you to switch to night mode, it is time to put down your phone.

It is not the colour of the screen that is keeping you awake; it is all the stuff your phone offers as an alternative to sleep at 2 am. There is only one real night-mode switch: the off button.

Adapted from The Guardian

Night mode is meant to _____.

  • have your phone be less distracting to others
  • inform you when it has become critically late
  • protect your eyes when using a phone at night
  • let you sleep easier after using your phone

In Paragraph 1, what is the meaning of "rubbish"?

  • Criticize
  • Investigate
  • Devalue
  • Adjust

In Paragraph 1, when the author says "All things being equal", what aspect does he mean is most important?

  • When the same person is using the phone
  • When the phone users are equally tired
  • When the screen's light is equally bright
  • When the environment is equally dark

What does Dr. Brown mean by saying "There was definitely a valid scientific idea for why that would work"?

  • Reducing the amount of blue light was the right idea.
  • There was much debate about reducing the blue light.
  • Scientists were certain limiting blue light would work.
  • Limiting blue light seemed to be a reasonable solution.

According to Dr. Brown, what did scientists previously get wrong?

  • The brightness of light is related to its position in the colour spectrum.
  • Blue light is more important than yellow at regulating the body clock.
  • Melanopsin only detects light in the blue range of the light spectrum.
  • Detecting colour is the chief role of melanopsin, not light's intensity.

What is NOT true about blue light?

  • It is night mode's main colour of light.
  • It is considered to be a cooler colour.
  • It is more relaxing than yellow light.
  • It has a relatively shorter wavelength.

What about a phone is the author most likely to blame for poor sleep?

  • Not utilizing night mode
  • Switching night mode to 'on'
  • Its late-night notifications
  • Its collection of enticing apps

What is the passage mainly about?

  • Why using night mode is a bad idea
  • How night mode could be improved
  • Why night mode likely fails at its goal
  • How night mode colours were chosen
