Read the following passage then choose the best answer to each question below.

A mother loves and takes care of her child. This strong feeling is called the maternal instinct. It’s something all mothers have for their children. But does this feeling exist in animals, too? Yes! It can be seen in many animals in sweet and amazing ways.

For many animals, the mother's job is to help her babies grow up. Baby animals are very weak and need protection. Not all animals in the wild are kind. A mother crocodile carries her baby in her mouth. Even though her sharp teeth can crush bones, she gently holds the baby. She takes it to the water and looks after it. Dogs and cats also carry their babies in their mouths. They spend a lot of time grooming and feeding their babies. Gorilla mothers carry their babies on their backs. They feed them and share a nest with them until they are six years old.

Animal mothers show their care in surprising ways. When danger comes, the gazelle mother will leave her baby in a safe place. She then walks away so the danger will follow her instead. This shows how far mothers will go to protect their children. In the bird world, the maternal instinct is just as strong. A mother bird carefully builds a nest for her eggs, keeping them safe and warm. After the eggs hatch, she spends days feeding her chicks until they are strong enough to fly. Similarly, a mother whale shows love and care by gently pushing her baby to the surface of the water so it can breathe. She stays close to her baby, swimming with it until it can survive on its own. The power of maternal instinct is clear in the whole animal world.
