Liam: Our school is organizing a big International Food Festival next month, and I’ve been put in charge of the whole event.
Sophie: I mean, it's a lot of responsibility to manage everything, even if you are great at planning things.
Liam: Definitely. I’m a bit worried because we don't have enough volunteers to prepare the different dishes yet.
Sophie: Don’t worry too much. Most students enjoy sharing their family recipes and showing off their cooking skills.
Liam: I hope so. By the way, I’m trying to persuade my cousin from Italy to come and join us.
Sophie: That’s a great idea! He could show everyone how to make authentic pasta from scratch.
Liam: Exactly! Having someone with his skills would make the festival much more special for everyone.

SCHOOL LUNCH
Research has shown that over half the children in Britain who take their own lunches to school do not eat in the middle of the day. In Britain, schools have to provide meals at lunchtime. Children can choose to bring their own food or have lunch in the school canteen.
One shocking of this research is that school meals are much healthier than lunches prepared by parents. There are strict standards for the preparation of school meals, which have to include one portion of fruit and one of the vegetables, as well as meat, a dairy item and starchy food like bread or pasta. Lunchboxes examined by researchers contained sweet drinks, crisps and chocolate . Children consume twice as much sugar as they should at lunchtime.
The reseat will provide a better understanding of why the percentage of overweight students in Britain in the last decade. Unfortunately, the government cannot instruct parents, it can remind them of the nutritional value of milk, fruit and vegetables. Children can easily develop bad eating habits at this age, and parents are the only ones can prevent it.
Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.
When you walk through a quiet forest, the tall trees appear to stand in complete silence, each one seemingly isolated from its neighbours. In recent years, however, scientists have discovered that these towering plants are far from alone: an intricate communication network exists beneath the soil, commonly referred to as the "Wood Wide Web." This remarkable system is formed by millions of microscopic fungi that wrap themselves around the roots of nearby trees.
Rather than competing constantly for resources, trees appear to rely on this hidden network to support one another. When a young sapling struggles to grow in a heavily shaded part of the forest, larger, more established trees can transfer extra sugar and water to it through the fungal threads that connect their roots. Because of this nurturing role, researchers often refer to these older trees as "mother trees." The fungal network itself functions rather like a set of underground cables, linking the trees of an entire forest together. In exchange for providing this service, the fungi are given a small share of the sugar that the trees produce through photosynthesis.
This underground system also plays a crucial role as an early-warning mechanism. Should a tree come under attack from insects, the injured plant releases chemical signals into the shared root network almost immediately. Once these signals reach neighbouring trees, the unaffected trees begin producing unpleasant-tasting chemicals of their own, effectively preparing their leaves before the insects can reach them. As a result of these hidden connections, a forest should not be regarded merely as a collection of separate trees, but rather as a single, closely cooperating community.
What can be inferred from the first paragraph about our previous understanding of forests?
It was commonly assumed that trees existed completely independently of one another.
The quietness of the environment was thought to be essential for their survival.
Microscopic fungi were considered the main cause of the trees' isolation.
Why does the author compare the fungal network to "underground cables"?
How do healthy trees react upon receiving chemical signals from a damaged neighbour?
They alter the chemistry of their leaves to make them unappealing to insects.
They release toxic substances into the soil to destroy the approaching insects.
They transfer extra nutrients to the injured plant to help it survive the attack.
