WHAT MAKES SOMEONE INTELLIGENT?

Some people claim that only humans are truly intelligent. But what about animals - are they intelligent too? They can learn and remember. However, many of their actions are instinctive, even though they may look intentional. Generally, animals cannot pass one crucial test of self-awareness - they are unable to identify themselves in a mirror. In fact, we're not really sure exactly what intelligence is or how to measure. In the competitive job market, IQ scores and formal are used in the selection of employees, although many successful people did not actually do very well at school.

So how are education, intelligence and success connected? It is generally agreed that intelligence is all about the ability to learn, solve problems and successful in life. But is there more to it than that? What about the of emotions? Successful people often show a level of 'emotional intelligence'. This is described as self awareness - they can understand their feelings, organise and manage them. And above all this understanding means that they can motivate themselves, which seems to be the key to success.

So is there any point in teaching emotional intelligence in schools? It would seem that there is - if only we knew how.

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

In recent years, the term "brain rot" has become popular on the internet to describe a very modern problem. Despite its scary name, this is not a real medical condition. Instead, it describes the mental exhaustion and confusion people feel after spending too much time watching fast-paced, short videos online.

Social media platforms are cleverly designed to keep users hooked for as long as possible. [I] As a result, people who constantly watch an endless stream of short, unrelated videos often find themselves switching their attention too quickly. This constant change makes it harder for them to focus on one task for a long time. For example, a student might find reading a normal book incredibly slow and boring, because their brain is used to getting instant entertainment. Furthermore, this digital overload often leads to a deep sense of tiredness. [II]

However, health experts point out that this digital fatigue is a temporary habit problem, not a sign of permanent brain damage. Fixing this issue requires self-control rather than medical treatment. Experts recommend building healthy digital habits, such as setting clear limits on screen time and taking part in relaxing offline activities. [III] A simple, quiet walk outside can really help refresh the brain. Ultimately, while the internet provides endless entertainment, managing how much media we consume is the most important step in protecting our mental health.

According to paragraph 2, why might a student find reading a book boring?

  • Reading requires physical effort that causes severe stress.

  • Books contain overly complex language and structure.

  • Their minds have adapted to receiving instant entertainment.

The author implies that modern social media platforms ______.

  • intentionally encourage habits that cause digital fatigue

  • design features primarily to protect users' mental health

  • offer experimental solutions to improve daily focus

What can be inferred about "brain rot" from paragraph 3?

  • It requires professional medical advice if the tiredness lasts too long.
  • It can be resolved by making intentional changes to daily routines.
  • It is most effectively managed by resting the brain through extra sleep.

Where should the following sentence be placed in the passage?

"These unplugged activities give the mind a chance to slow down and recover from continuous digital entertainment."

  • [I]

  • [II]

  • [III]

Which statement best summarizes the main message of the passage?

  • Taking quiet walks outside is the most effective way to prevent social media platforms from controlling human behavior.

  • Short online videos cause mental exhaustion and poor focus, but adopting healthier habits can reverse this temporary issue.

  • "Brain rot" can soon be considered a medical condition caused by social media, but taking medication refreshes your mental health.
