Once it recognises the error, it typically retreats - which is precisely why most people bitten by great whites survive the encounter.
None of this makes great whites gentle. They remain powerful hunters with acute eyesight and a sense of smell capable of detecting a single drop of blood diluted across an Olympic-sized swimming pool. They are simply not hunting humans on purpose, and understanding that distinction may be the key to protecting one of the ocean's most ancient predators.
