Ecotourism

The primary aim of ecotourism is to educate the traveller and bring him or her closer to nature. The Great Pyramid of Giza was built over 4,500 years ago. It consists of more than two million stone blocks, and many of these stones weigh heavier than modern cars. For centuries, this massive structure has fascinated historians. How did ancient builders move such enormous objects without modern machinery?

The clue, it turns out, was hiding in plain sight for nearly four thousand years. Physicists at the University of Amsterdam took that ancient image seriously enough to test it in a lab. Adding the right amount of water changed the physical nature of the sand. The wet sand became much stiffer, which significantly reduced the friction between the sled and the ground. Because the wet sand acted like a solid road, the builders could drag the stones much more easily. In fact, the Dutch team calculated that this technique reduced the required pulling force by half.

While researchers are still investigating other construction methods, the wet sand theory provides a practical answer. It proves that the ancient Egyptians were not just hard workers, but also brilliant problem solvers.
