COULD COMPUTER GAMES BE GOOD FOR YOU AFTER ALL

In Britain, the average young person now spends more money on games each year than on going to the cinema or renting videos. But is this necessarily a bad thing? For years, newspaper reports have been saying that children who spend too much time playing computer games become unsociable, bad-tempered, even violent as a . But new research, out in both Europe and the USA, suggests that the opposite may be true.

Indeed, playing some of the more complicated games may help people of all ages to certain skills. Researchers claim that this is because the games make the brain work harder in certain ways, like noticing sounds and movements quickly and identifying what they are. The fact that people play the games repeatedly means that they get a lot of practice in these skills which are therefore likely to become highly developed.

Social skills may benefit, too. Researchers in Chicago think that fans of first-person shooter games Counterstrike” are better than non-players when it comes to building trust and co-operation and that this helps them to make good friendships and become strong members of their communities. So rather than up computer games, perhaps young people need to spend more time on them?

Read the following passage and choose the correct answer to each of the questions.

Even though we often talk about movies made before 1927 as "silent," they were never completely silent. From the very beginning, music was regarded as an indispensable accompaniment. For example, during the first public movie showing in the United States in February 1896, the Lumiere films were played with piano music that improvised on popular songs. At first, the music played bore no special relationship to the films; any kind of music was good enough. But soon, it became clear that playing random live music with a serious movie didn't work well. So, movie pianists started to choose music that fit the mood of the movie.

As movie theaters grew in number and importance, a violinist, and perhaps a cellist, would be added to the pianist in certain cases, and in the larger movie theaters, small orchestras were formed. For a number of years, the selection of music for each film program rested entirely in the hands of the conductor or leader of the orchestra, and very often the principal qualification for holding such a position was not skill or taste but rather the ownership of a large personal library of musical pieces. Since the conductor seldom saw the films until the night before they were to be shown (if, indeed, the conductor was lucky enough to see them then), the musical arrangement was normally improvised in the greatest hurry.

To help meet this difficulty, film distributing companies started the practice of publishing suggestions for musical accompaniments. In 1909, for example, the Edison Company began issuing with their films such indications of mood as "pleasant', "sad", "lively". The suggestions got clearer over time. Eventually, they made a musical cue sheet. This sheet listed the moods, the names of good music pieces, and detailed instructions on when to switch from one piece of music to another.

Certain films had music specially composed for them. The most famous of these early special scores was composed and arranged for D. W. Griffith's film Birth of a Nation, which was released in 1915.
