Read the following passage and choose the best answer for each blank.

THE LEANING TOWER OF PISA

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the most famous landmarks in Italy. It is a beautiful bell tower located in a large square. However, it is not famous for its beauty alone, but for its strange tilt. The tower started to lean during the years of construction. This was a big problem because the ground under the building was very soft and could not support its heavy weight.

The tower is about 56 metres high and it has many floors. It took almost 200 years to complete the whole structure because work was stopped many times by wars and problems. There is a famous story about a scientist named Galileo. People say he went to the top of the tower to an experiment. He dropped two balls of different weights to see if they would land at the same time.

By 1990, the tower had leaned so much that it was no longer strong or steady. The government decided to it to visitors for safety reasons. Experts spent many years trying to fix the foundation and make the tower stable again. After a lot of hard work, the tower became enough and reopened in 2001. Today, millions of tourists visit the tower to see its unique shape and take creative photos.

One of the biggest challenges any runner can take on is the marathon, a footrace that is just over 26 miles (42 kilometers) long. It requires both strength and strategy.
