Read the following passage and choose the best answer for each blank.

THE OLYMPIC GAMES

four years, more than 120 countries send their best athletes to compete the Olympic Games. Thousands of men and women take part in more than twenty different sports, and millions of people around the world watch the events on television.

The Olympic Games began in Ancient Greece more than 2000 years ago, when athletes gathered to honour the gods through sport. The modern Olympics were in Athens, Greece, in 1896, and since then the event has grown into the largest sporting competition in the world.

Individual and team achievement is the central of the Olympics, not competition between nations. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) chooses a city, not a country, to host the Games, and cities often spend years preparing new stadiums and facilities to welcome athletes and visitors.

Unlike many professional sports, the Olympics offer no prize money. Instead, individuals and teams compete for gold, silver and bronze medals, which are seen as symbols of honour rather than reward. For many athletes, simply representing their country on this stage is considered the greatest achievement of their careers.

Read the following passage then choose the best answer to each question.

Many British people don't think about clothes very much. They just like to be comfortable. When they go out to enjoy themselves, they can wear almost anything. At theatres, cinemas and concerts you can put on what you like from elegant suits and dresses to jeans and sweaters. Anything goes, as long as you look clean and tidy. However, in Britain as well as the US, men in offices usually wear suits and ties, and women wear dresses or skirts (not trousers). Doctors, lawyers and business people wear quite formal clothes. And in some hotels and restaurants men have to wear ties and women wear smart dresses.

In many ways, Americans are more relaxed than British people, but they are more careful with their clothes. At home, or on holiday, most Americans wear informal or sporty clothes. But when they go out in the evening, they like to look elegant. In good hotels and restaurants, men have to wear jackets and ties, and women wear pretty clothes and smart hairstyles.

It is difficult to say exactly what people wear, whether it is informal or formal in Britain and the US, because everyone is different. If you are not sure what to wear, watch what other people do and then do the same. You'll feel more relaxed if you don't look too different from everyone else.

What is the passage mainly about?

  • The history of the fashion industry in Britain and the US
