I couldn’t see our parrot, Archie, but I could hear him. “Yankee Doodle went to town,” he sang. It was his favorite song.
Archie was stuck in our maple tree in the backyard - again. This time, it was my brother Peter’s fault. He was carrying a tent into the yard, and he had left the door open. Archie flew out. His wings hurt, so he couldn’t get far. But the wind carried him like a kite into the big maple tree. He hopped to a very high branch, and there he sat, singing away.
“That bird is annoying,” Peter said as he ducked inside his tent.
Usually, whenever Archie escapes, Dad pulls his ladder from the garage. He climbs the ladder and tries to persuade Archie with grapes, Archie’s favorite food. But this time, Dad was gone. We were home alone, and we knew Dad wouldn’t want us to climb the ladder ourselves. But we weren’t sure what time he’d be back. Plus, we had to get Archie down before my sister Katya got home from her soccer tournament. She loved Archie and would cry and be unhappy if he wasn’t in his cage.
As the afternoon went on, Archie got hungry. “Time for dinner?” he asked in a sad voice, over and over. It was getting dark. I was just about to call the fire department when Dad pulled into the driveway.
Whose fault was Archie's escape?
How would Katya feel if she got home and Archie was still in the tree?
What will probably happen later?

One of the most unusual bears known to man is the panda bear. Panda bears live in southwestern China. They live in misty forests of bamboo. There are two main types of pandas. They are the giant black-and-white panda and the red panda. They weigh anywhere from 175 to 275 pounds. They get anywhere from five to six feet in height. A newborn panda cub is about the size of a chipmunk. They are born blind and are completely helpless. They rely heavily on their mother. Once the baby panda leaves its mother, it will live all alone.
Pandas are active during both the day and at night. The most important plant in the life of a panda bear is bamboo. They spend about 12 hours of their day eating bamboo. That’s a lot of bamboos! Pandas have special bones in their wrists that enable them to grab the stalks of the bamboo. Pandas will peel away the outer edge of the stalk and eat the soft inner portion of the bamboo. Their giant molars crush the bamboo stalks. The panda will also eat the bamboo leaves. Pandas have also been known to eat mushrooms, insects, grasses, fish, fruit, and rice.
Pandas move in a very slow, methodical manner. Unlike some bears, the panda bear does not hibernate. They live in a climate where they can be active and eat throughout the year.
